I throw mostly jigs and soft plastics. Mono or braid? Why?

I'd go with 40lb braid with a 6ft 15lb flourocarbon leader.

If I throw braid I use a leader -

10 or 12 pound is all I use

Mono for worms - but I use flouro for jigs - just the way I grew up doing it - dont know if it really matters

Spinning reel or baitcaster? What is the reel rated for? Lastly, what are you fishing for and how prevalent is cover?

For example, if you were fishing for Bass in an area similar to mine where dense cover is sparse, anything over 14lb test is unnecessary. So if you were fishing with a baitcaster rated for 14lb test, I'd go with a 14lb flourocarbon line. If you have dense cover, I'd swap to the braid with equivalent diameter and tie on a flourocarbon leader.

If you are fishing with a spinning reel, then they're typically rated for less diameter line. I do run 8lb flourocarbon for open water, but it's even a bit too heavy for unweighted plastics. I will use a 10-15lb braid (4 lb test size equivalent) for light baits very often. Using a dark smoke color, I rarely find need to add a leader since it's so thin unless the fish are being ultra finicky.

For a 1/2 jig or Carolina Rig I'll drag on bottom, I'll use a heavier braid with a flourocarbon leader.

It really all depends on what you're working with and trying to do.

I'm in the north east fishing really clear water so I use a lot of fluorocarbon 15-20 lb for jigs and heaver texas rigs.
