Looking for tips on catching fish on the drop. I don’t get it.
So my partner catches a lot of fish using a jig, and he catches quite a few while the lure is dropping to the floor. I hear a lot of people catching fish while the lure is falling. My question is if your lure is falling to the floor, your bale on the reel has to be open so how do you know if you have a bite? If someone could explain this I’d be forever grateful. Tight lines guys.

You watch for the line to twitch and set the hook if it does. I don't always have my bale open either.

Watch the line move in the water and when it does set the hook

I close the bail once the bait hits the water. Sometimes it's more of an unexpected slackness that indicates a bite, as opposed to a tap or tug.
Edit: Maybe it would help to start with a question... what are you finding for? Answer above applies to bass, but I'm told people fish for other things as well.

Up in order for it to hit bottom when you cast it you need to leave your bale open correct? Yes this is for bass.
Maybe I need to cast further than my target and flip the bail when it hits the water that way it will sink to my targeted location. Sounds good in theory at least. Thanks guys.

Have you watched your buddy. If not cast out when the lure hits the water, raise your rod to the 12 or 1 o'clock position and close the bale. Tilt your rod, to th 10 o'clock position and watch your line
Much easier with a bait casting reel.
