Just letting people know. I know of five different boat trailer swing away hitches that have broke. When they break all hell breaks loose. Your boat will swing all over the road hit your truck wreck both boat and truck. The ones I've seen fail are on the eazy loader trailers. Ones a bolt on type made by Fulton, the other is an upgraded weld on swivel. Fulton and eazy loader neither one warranty this design. They don't warranty your wrecked truck or wrecked boat. Mine keeps breaking the 5/8" grade 8 bolt I've caught it three times. Next time I might not be so lucky. Tomorrow mine will get welded solid. Since eazy loader can't send me the right tongue for 300 dollars. It's a foot and a half to short. Check your hitch every time you take off. On long trips check every hundred miles. My last bolt made it just under 500 miles.

Thank you for the info., Egg. I don't have one, and will not get one.

Hey dude keep in mind a grade 8 bolt will break quicker than a grade 5 the 8 is hardened causing it to be more brittle where the 5 will bend

You can but a lock that will fit over the trailer hitch.
I had the nut on the ball hitch welded so that when the boat was off of the trailer someone couldn't undo the ball hitch and take the trailer.
It's a shame that we have to do that.

Thanks for the info. When I first saw those I thought they were the greatest idea in years, but apparently they didn’t take care of all the details through testing. Amazing they don’t have to cover damage due to an obvious design flaw.

Do any of you hear the sound of a large lawsuit! I do!! I thought that was a good idea, and I would guess others did too.

Well after talking to EZ loader, and getting a new tongue that's 1 1/2 feet to short for 275 bucks. They said they could get me the right one for 460 bucks I could send the wrong one back but that would cost more than the original price. 🖕Em. For 845 dollars I will make my own tongue, and it will be right this time for 50 bucks in steel. This will be the last EZ Loader I ever own......

Can’t blame you for that. Hard to believe their arrogance. Good luck with your redesign and retrofit.

I have a swing away hitch on one boat. It's manufactured by bass pro & is a really substantial made affair. I had never had that kind of hitch before & looked it over close. I pulled the trailer to Ontario last year & made a trip with it to Alabama last month which was around 1900 miles total, not counting Ontario. I've pulled the pin several times & checked for wear points & cracks then checked the swivel joint for uneven wear. So far I have found nothing but that doesn't mean I feel 100% confident. I too have heard stories. My boat & trailer weight 5000 pounds so if that hitch breaks my fat ass could get in a bind very quickly. I'll continue checking it closely & hopefully I'll have it with me in Lawrence next year.

Change to grade 8 bolts, stronger, SS very soft metal.

I owned a Nitro 19 footer on a trailer with a swing away hitch and absolutely loved it. I replaced the original pin with an aircraft grade locking pin. Probably towed it 20k miles without any problems. Sure sounds like an engineering problem.

I dont know about ss being softer metal...perhaps what didnt stick to the magnets were aluminum, which are definitely softer...aircraft grade or not.
