You have hit a sore point there. I love the comics in the news paper, but the Houston Chronicle is so warped toward liberalism and democratric candidates, I would cancel our subscription, but my wife won't let me. I do love the comics and read the paper is a set way every day! Just Sayin...RJS

As a youngster back in the day, the Houston Chronicle was the conservatively-leaning paper, while the Houston Post was the more liberal. I guess times change. I know as kids, we loved the high school football coverage by the Chronicle.

Well, I rememer the outdoor editor of the Chronicle who was a super storyteller and did an excellent job. in fact when he retired at the end of 2019 that was how I found Fishing Forum and became a member, but I've never been able to find him yet.

But the Chronicle bought the Post and the Post had converted them to a sniviling whining wasteland of liberalism and socialism and a crying shame. Might be fine in CA, but its a bunch of used toilet paper here.Just Sayin...RJS

As I said, times change. Whether they are better or not depends on an individual's viewpoint or perspective.

I believe one should always seek out both points of view. For no other reason than to keep an eye on your enemy. But probably mostly because the truth lies somewhere in between. Back when I read the paper I used to get several from different parts of the country and do comparisons. Aside from their editorials I most often found their reporting of contemporary events to be remarkably similar. People used to bring the Sacramento Bee and the San Francisco Chronicle in to work and I'd do the crossword puzzles, rarely actually read them. I'd hear people I considered from both sides of the aisle bitching because they thought they were either too liberal or too conservative. As I said, the truth probably lies some where in the middle. Can't please everyone, so you gotta please yourself.

Well, Spirit, thanks for a seasoned and sensible reply. After the election is over, I will go back to reading more of our paper. At this point, the news, regaredless is a poisoned watering hole, both sides, in my opinion. I too like the crossword puzzles when i have time. Just Sayin...RJS

Given the ages of the usual posters, my guess is that there a lot of us 'old schoolers' on FS.

If you aren't liberal while you're young, you have no heart.
If you aren't conservative when you get older, you have no brain.

...Not sure how to feel when I go into my second childhood!

Back in 1961, my Dad was the driller on an oil rig in Northern California. He and his crew watched a B-52 crash. They all saw it clearly and they all related just about the exact same story. The next day, we bought about six different newspapers, and you'd hardly know that they were writing about the same event! All kinds of details were different, and most of them were nothing like what my Dad and his crew saw. Since then, I have been VERY skeptical of anything I see in the paper. And if it's anything political - liberal OR conservative, it's all SPIN! The phase "Objective reporting" is an enormous load of BS!

Generally speaking, its hard to argue otherwise.

Generally speaking I believe you need a find a source that you can trust and follow that reporter. Of course they put their own spin on a story, but that's how you weed em out. If you agree or not with their spin and they seem to be honest and above all consistent, then you've found a good one. Big papers like The NY Times and Chicago Trib usually have their own editorialists and the smaller papers usually publish those bigger papers' editorials, and most also have their own. For example - I don't always agree with him, but I respect and follow George Will. I was a huge fan of William Buckley and I never particularly agreed with him on some of his social views, but you for sure knew where he was coming from. David Frum is also consistent and coherent. My point is, since "the news" especially tv news, has had to be profitable (since the sixties), the days of guys like Edward R Murrow and Walter Cronkite are long gone. Are you really gonna set there and watch "thenews" and the commercials that go along with if it's just straight news reporting, Jack Webb - just the facts. Think about it. Ya gotta put in a little time, just like in the garden, pull the weeds and watch the peppers grow and ripen.
