Anyone know why bait (minnows, crayfish, rockworms, etc) live longer when kept in styrofoam containers?
I believe they allow more air, and they don’t rust.
I would think the insulation factor is most responsible. The maintenance of temps avoids the shock-factor of being set in the sun or shade or simply reaction to ambient air temp. Worms, leeches etc. certainly "last" longer in styrofoam vs "cottage cheese"-type containers. Just.. please...be careful with the styrofoam cups, containers, buckets, coolers, what-have-you's... styrofoam is horrible stuff for the environment ! Wildlife will ingest it, it will "breakdown" about the time your great-great grandchildren have grandchildren, and chunks floating by my boat or washed up on the shore just make me sad. Use styrofoam wisely, please.

If it comes within my reach I pick the stuff up. I carry plastic garbage bags in my boat just for that. It only takes a second to pick it but it takes decades for it to break down in the environment.
We should ALL be doing this, fisherperson or not. Cigarette butts are another pet peeve of mine...and I am a smoker. Keep it up and spread the word, please, all of you. Thanks .....from 7 generations out !
