My daughter in law is catching a lot of Jack Smelt out of Ventura Harbor CA
Are they any good for bait? They don't seem to be very oily. Is rigging live on a Halibut rig worth it? Don't want to keep them and kill them for no reason.

As long as they're TOO big. I think the best ones are bout 6 to 8 inches long. Any bigger than that they don't seem to go for. At least when I've been fishin out in Tomales Bay they don't.
Anyway, jack smelt are usually very good bait when we can catch them.
