Ok, I think, duh, I know the problem, but I will ask professionals what they think, that's you!! I know how to cast a bait caster, been doing it since I was 16 yrs old or so. Very few 'bird nest' in all those yrs. Well that is the past. I have one of mine that is giving me grief. The line is braid, and I use that in all my BC's. I keep getting the nest when I cast overhead, not when I cast side arm. Much like when you are throwing under trees, no nest. It happens about 20 to 30ft out. There is no knot, I just have to strip off some line, and good to go. I changed the line last yr. 40lb braid, and tried some new Piscifun Lunker line. I have used this a lot, but this yr. hmmmmm I will cast and get nest, 4 out of 10 cast. What do you think is the problem?

Try this it improved my bird nest problem. During your cast, while the lure is still in the air rotate your wrist so one side of your reel either crank or opposite faces down. I have one Abu Garcia that I have a problem with and if I do this, no problem.

I will try that, but it never gave me a problem for 14 yrs. Going to the backyard and try in the pond. Back soon.

Ivey I tried, I even tied on a heavier bait, to see if that would do, but same thing. I think it is the line, myself.

If your reel is 14 years old you may want to take a look at the breaks inside the reel itself. They are sometimes made of a plastic type material, depending on reel type and may be worn out. If they aren't worn out they may just need adjusting.

You may try using your thumb on the spool. Once in awhile I'll start a nest but usually stop it before it gets bad as my thumb is slower than my brain.

What kind of rod? Is it the same rod you have alway been using? Are you casting it harder than before? Maybe the extra fling of the rod is causing the spool of the reel to over spin? Have you try adjusting your preload again?

When you figure out the problem could you either post the solution or PM me. I'm not experiencing any trouble but I can put the problem & solution in my steel trap memory in case I run into a similar problem. Also, what reel were you using? I know you're no beginner. i tried some Cabela's braid a few years ago. It was terrible. It worked in an Ambassador 5500C but not in my Shimano Calcutta. Have fun researching.
