Clean the regularly. Also keep them oiled/lubed and make the the reel internals have grease on the gears.

Or white lithium grease. I've bought lots of used reels over the years and they either had old crusty grease or were full of white lithium grease.

First and foremost, rinse them down after every use. Do NOT drown the reels, just lighly spray them off.
Why not use WD40 on them ? I have not herd this before.
WD40 is a solvent not a lubracant. It will desolve your reel grease within the reel.
what kind of grease should I use to lubricate my reels ?
m'thinks most of the Chinese stuff has built-in obsolesce; about two years depending on use.
Touch base with your local reel repair shop to find out what lube they use and buy a tube from them.
