I was born and raised in Fremont,Ca...but my Dad was born in Oaklahoma and Mom from Arkansas....My dad would go on strike at Ford Motor Co and had no money comin' in. He say, "Boys, get the cane polls down off the roof and let's head for the Delta. We'd fish all night for catfish and switch to bobbers in the mornin' and catch about 100 or so fish...fill anIce chest to the top. We'd get home exhausted and Dad would say, OK Boys, get them fish cleaned up before you go to bed...we'd wake up in the afternoon about 3 O'clock and we'd have a mess of fish. Mom wouldn't cook any side dishes cause you wanted to save room for fish...maybe just a stack of white bread in case you got a bone stuck in your throat...Soon we'd all have a huge pile of bones and a huge belly of fish....My mom learned to fry fish from her Dad who was raised on the Mississippi River...we did use catchup though....Man do I miss my Mom's fried Catfish and Blue Gill

Bluegill are definitely sport fish in Wisconsin! They wouldn't have a catch limit otherwise. If you're using them for bait, they have to be caught in the same body of water you are fishing in. Also, they cannot be transported live.

I watched Curt Gowdy' son, can't remember his name but he took over hosting his Dad's fishing show and danged if I can't remember the name of that either. Anyway they did one show on a little known lake named Englebright in Nor Cal. They caught perch in the marina and used them for bait on 6 and 7 lb smallmouth bass.

Trevor! Thanks Fred. That doesn't ring a bell for the show though. I remember watching his Dad's show when there was only 5 TV stations to watch.

can you please post a picture of one of them perch? far as I know, there aren't any perch in California, but you natives, which I assume you are, like to call anything that isn't a bass - a perch.

These are perch. I've been fishing here for over 40 years and I've never seen one. Used to catch em all the time when I's growing up in Indiana. In my opinion, they are better than bluegill. The walleye is also a type of perch and there aren't any of those here either. They are also delicious and better than bluegill. I've never fished Englebright - you have to have a boat, zero shore space. I think people mostly go there to fish for Kokanee, which is another delicious fish.

Bapabear, so you can't use any shiners of any kind, even native ones from the water you're fishing?

You are correct Steve. They do. From Wikipedia:

The Sacramento perch (Archoplites interruptus) is an endangered sunfish (family Centrarchidae) native to the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta, Pajaro, and Salinas River areas in California, but widely introduced throughout the western United States.

Call it what you want, it's a sunfish, not a perch. And it's endangered. It is not "indigenous throughout California".

As I said, I don't believe there any "perch" in California. And, as I said, you native Californians like to call anything that isn't a bass, a perch.

Generally wrong, seldom in doubt. That's me.
