That's a damn shame, loss of a boat but hopefully you guys us are OK. Cigarettes are good for nothing. Were you able to salvage the gear? What kind of boat?

I'll bet the buddy felt bad, but not as bad as you did. My brother and I were fishing a log time ago, and the motor caught on fire and my brother just unscrewed it from the boat and dropped it in the Miss. River. We had to row back. No electric motors back then.

That reminds me!!! I have the fire extinguisher but did not check it this spring. Has a good /bad dial indicator so it is simple. Just underneath my console and I always look at it - I will definitely check it now in case I see your boat on fire I can help out. I have used 5 extinguishers through the years on vehicle fires while traveling. Saved most from total meltdown.

It's also a good idea to turn the extinguishers upside down and tap the bottom , this loosens the powder that over time compacts to the bottom

Yah, usually shake them up. For work I had 150 extinguishers that had to be checked by the state every year so learned all about the care - just plain blew it. Just checked it this am and all is still good. Thanks for the advise - I’m sure others need to check theirs also. Actually have two in my truck - as mentioned I’ve used them 5 times for vehicle fires while traveling and only once had to grab the second one. Vehicles look like crap when you get done but hey they are not a molten heap.

Maybe he had deposited a little ‘propulsion gas’ on the seat and that is the reason it took off.

My wife and son were in my truck many years ago. My son had his knee against a. Cigarette lighter , it began to smoke. Thankfully a stranger grabbed the extinguisher! and unloaded it . It was a year later and still sometimes closing the door the powder would fall lol

I have all kinds of suggestions for how to have dealt with the burning seat, but being a Monday morning quarterback won't help anyone. I'll shut my trap and go check my own extinguishers.
