Guess it really depends on where you live. In southern New England most of the independent tackle and bait shops are on the coast. Saltwater Fishing is often best with live or chunk bait so these stores do a pretty good business there plus they give great advice. Wouldn’t trade that for anything. I do patronize them and at least replenish some my saltwater terminal tackle through them. Walmart around here is about useless. For what they have they are the cheapest. The best rod you will find is an ugly stick (not so bad and they have their place), but the reels are all 40 dollar and under junk. Wallymart is OK for fresh water terminal tackle , plastics and dough baits. No saltwater but I am a whole 45 miles from the ocean. Dicks has some ok fishing equipment . They have some better rods and some decent under 100 dollar reels. Lots of terminal tackle but not much tungsten or tin (MA, NH, ME and VT require lead free sinkers jigs etc that weigh less than 1 ounce). I fish in those states as well as CT so I only buy lead free. Keeps thing simpler. Lots of other fishing supplies and accessories. Around here I believe Dick’s is the best bang for the buck and I don’t care about their gun policy (I neither hunt nor have any inclination to own hand gun. Doesn’t mean you can’t) . Their curbside pickup worked pretty well during the COVID shutdown as well. They still offer it which I like but they are pretty well out of stock on terminal tackle. Cabela’s is the only decently stocked fishing store within 30 miles of me. Not cheap but Cabela’s brand and Bass Pro brands haven’t let me down and they have decent sales on the house brands with some frequency. Kind of have another nice affinity with them . About 14 years ago we planned a trip to Michigan and I was considering returning to fishing after a 40 year hiatus . My wife surprise we completely shocked me actually with some fishing gear at Christmas. They walked her through couple of reasonably priced outfits as that have served me well since. Try that at Dicks or Walmart. Your local tackle shop would have probably really good at that as well.Trip never happened though. Colleague at work left, leaving me solo, so vacation was out that year followed by a year and half bout with cancer the next year. Other than that it’s online for fishing equipment .The usuals, tackle warehouse, Amazon Academy , Bass Pro, Cabela’s online , etc. If Walmart has what you need it’s the cheapest.

The best cheap fishing items are fee market and yard sales estate sales.the best part is the hunt for those items.
