Not supposed to ask, gives them the impression they have a say in things...
Te correct method is to clearly inform them that at such and such a date they will become your wife.... And if there is any womanly matter following the statement, just toss the fact that they should be busy picking out a wedding dress into the equation.... Won't hear from them again until it's time for the vows...
