They use them like a down rigger but hooks directly to your fishing line. It dives to the desired depth you want then when a fish hits your lure or bait, there is a release on it allowing you to reel it in without struggling against the current or trolling speed. Salmon fisherman use them a lot in the PNW

Sandworm. Dipsydiver, used when fishing more than two rods trolling as a cheap outrigger, causes lure to travel out away from behind boat so it does not tangle with other lines. Will trip for retrieve for ease in retrieval.

yes mike I use them off & on tying in front of your line to run your lures deep diving crank baits or spoons plastics any lure u choose great on deep water lakes when trolling to cover a lot of water .example to troll around 30 ,40 ,50 ,feet of water in summer when them big boys are!
