Does anyone have a recommendation for a fly fishing rod and reel to take backpacking?
I want to buy my husband a lightweight fly rod for his birthday. It would primarily be used for backpacking. He already has a Hobbs Creek brand rod but has commented in the past that it's too heavy to take on the trail. I just weighed it and the rod, reel and carrying tube is 2lbs 1oz. I don't know anything about fly fishing. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I would like to keep it less than $500 for a rod and reel combo.

Look into a tenkara rod. Tenkara is a traditional Japanese style of fishing. They use a 10-13 foot telescoping rod and no reel. Very light and very packable. The whole setup probably weighs 6-10 oz. It kind of depends on where he is going backpacking, though. they are great small to medium creek rods, a little limiting (though not impossible) on bigger water like alpine lakes.

It would mainly be creek and small river fishing. Thanks for the recommendation!

Moonshine Rod Co - Drifter 7'6" 3wt is a lot of fun on small streams, $200 (gives you plenty left for a good line & cheap reel - which is really just a line holder on a light rod like that)

Thanks for the recommendation. I just purchased one.
Eagle Claw makes a backpackers rod that has an ultralight tip and is a fly/spin combo. I’ve had two and backpacked Trinity Alps, Eastern Sierras and all over AZ. Comes with a nice case. About $80.00
