My 7" rod does not cast as far as my buddys Ugly Stik

Not exactly sure the model of his but it is definitely shorter than 7'. Mine is a Sojourn 7' rod with medium power fast action with a Strikeforce 4000-B reel and 20lb. line with 3/8ths oz. weight. Just wondering if it could be the line or reel that is holding it back in some way. Also wondering what it means by Line mono and Power pro?

Braid (power pro) will cast much farther than mono.

Because braid is both substantially thinner and lighter, it will cast further than same strength monofilament. Also “ is for inches and ‘ is for feet.

Ok thanks, how do I find out if it's mono filament or braid?

I think mono filament is your average plastic line and braid is the fiberous line. I'm a novice fisher so I could be wrong

Is it one single filament, or a few small filaments braided together? It's in the name.

It's probably mono. Spooling that setup with a decent braid would cost more than the rod and reel combined.

It's almost always the line.

Braid (look closely at where it is cut and it's braided fibers, doesn't stretch) casts farther but can have it's own unique set of issues.

Mono (single plastic filament, stretches) can still cast great but ages like a mofo and that's probably your problem right now.

Cheapest solution, get the XL Smooth Cast from trilene. It's amazing the difference that crap makes for it's price. Yes, there's way way better stuff, but it's a bit more expensive. Try a spool of XL Smooth Cast or something decent like it, learn the difference, then take another stop up to even better, or possibly even braided line.

Just don't dive in to expensive line, mishandle it, and waste an expensive spool.

Also, do you need 20lb test? What are you fishing for? If it's freshwater, anything other than catfish/carp and that's probably overkill unless you're talking pike or musky, and if it's that, disregard what I said because you need braided and a good metal leader.

Say, Hoss, are you catching fish? Is your goal simply to cast as far as your buddy, or outcast him, or to catch fish. If you are catching, then don't worry about it. If you aren't chatching fish, then empliment some of the suggestions listed above by others. Just Sayin...RJS

Put 50 weight on then you can catch any fish out about 15 yds lighter weight longer cast but if your fishing that’s great if your catching even better

3/8 oz on 20 lb mono is not going to cast well. Medium on your rod is more like 10-12 lb test mono. Your reel is rated for 10-12# mono. Your line is way too heavy for your outfit.

Did you ever stop and think it might not be the rod?
