Flyguy: I attended a Rotary Club meeting where the speaker gave a speech about prairie chickens and that their biggest enemy was house cats that would be allowed out at night and hunted for the sport of it. They would kill both the adult birds and any babies in the nest. She was at a loss on how to handle this problem.
After the meeting at least two of us went up and gave her our solution. A .22 short between the eyes! I personnaly believe any house cat out hunting should be shot on sight. They are the biggest enemy of any ground nesting bird and they don't even eat their quarry. They often will bring them home to show off to their human family what they've killed.

I admire them and their athleticism, but am allergic, so have no use for them. I will take a dog any day. Really have no use for feral cats.
We have had three cats, a Burmese, a stray, and Deumon, a French grey. None of these were ever allowed outside. We would remind them of what life was like on the street. All three finally died.
The Burmese and Deumon were both very warm and loving. Deumon loved me and every day, if I was in my easy chair, she would come and spend time in my lap and acted like she needed and liked being close to me.
But, I love dogs. We would have one except they are much higher maintenance. We do not have a back yard and would have to walk them a couple times a day. Just Sayin...RJS

Good story Fly. I would love to have seen that. The closest I have ever been to a similar situation was 18 hummingbirds at a feeder.
The closest I can get to that 10 daddy cardinals on my feeder one snowy winter day. Don't have many bluebirds around. Starlings pretty well squeezed them out years ago.
I did use mealworms to feed a native fish tank I had in my biology lab. Had a small bass and some sunfish in it. Kids limed to feed the worms to them.

Mealworm. We used to call them golden grubs..always found in the areas that we stored grain. I would lay a board or piece of plywood on the floor in the grain bin and always could find a bunch of them under the board. Great for perch, bluegill and sunfish.

Mealworms in Wyoming are great for Trout. Mealworms bought in Northern Indiana were so dang small and fragile it was almost impossible to get/keep them on a hook. But I guess the pet keepers - Lizards & such, liked them.
Where at in northern Indiana? I grew up there.
Great trout bait when fishing rivers.
