What is the benefit of using a leader? I was thinking about putting a fluorocarbon leader on my braid

Well braided line is more sensitive than fluorocarbon so you feel the bite immediately and can pull the bait out of the fishes mouth if you set the hook too quickly. Fluorocarbon and mono has a little bit of a stretch to it allowing the fish to completely take the bait before you feel it and set the hook. Also fish can see braided line a lot better than fluoro and may not take your lure if they see a line pulling it.

Thank you! How long should a leader normally be?

Well you want it to be long enough so the fish wont see the braided line and so you can have a good amount of line to stretch but the knot can get caught up in your spool so I usually do about 10 feet or so

I usually do a rods length for FW. When fishing SW, I only use 2-3’ since my lines are much heavier which means my knots are bigger and I don’t want to cast that through the guides to prevent damaging them.

3-7’. Heavier line you’ll probably want to go shorter due to bigger knot. And if you’re retying baits often, you’re going to burn through a short leader fairly quickly. I typically go ~6’ but I do run into issues with the knot catching guides occasionally.

Connect the two lines with a FB/FG knot and you will have no problems with passing the knot thru the guides or on the reel spool. I normally use one rod length leaders, that provides enough line to cut off and re-tie lures directly to the leader.

Here in NJ salt I use 4 feet. In Key West I use 10 feet. Seagur 20 pound is my choice.

[quote=1bald1]FB/FG ?[/quoting This knot is for connecting braid line to mono or Floro line together. It makes the smallest, thinnest knot possible for this purpose. Google it for a Utube video on how to tie it; at first it seems complicated, but with a couple of practice tries it is actually simple to tie.
