Take one lens and hold it against another pair...should see thru with no problem. Then, twist the one set 90 degrees to the other lens and now it should be completely dark...black actually. But whatever glasses you get, make sure they are 100 per cent UV rated. Your eyes will thank you for it.
Yes Yes ware those sun glass they will help see fish plus they help your eyes from sun Coastal marine ypu can get them fit over your glasses
You can buy reasonably inexpensive polarized prescription fishing glasses at Walmart.
They are now priced pretty cheap and as little to pay to protect your eyes.
You can get a nice pair of prescription polarized glasses for under $200.
for me (light blue eyes) good glasses are a necessity its literally the difference in enjoying the day and not... im under a welding hood most of my life and when i surface its bright out here... when the sun is on the lake and if there is any texture on the water without glasses i can barely even open my eyes.... i have forgotten them once or so, and will seriously pack up and head out because..... so personal preference, but some stuff to take into account... how sensitive are your eyes, do you sight fish, do you predominately fish in a sunny environment, or in overcast conditions.... what are your eyes worth to you, mine pay the bills, so i even have prescription window tint on both of my trucks also, and keep about 4-5 pairs of sun glasses in the truck.... its worth everything to me... $$$ is no object here..... good luck!
Just had cataract surgery so I use dark sunglasses for driving and those amber glasses that cut the glare and can see the fish in clear water and I wear a UV fishing ball cap. Otherwise the dark glasses are too dark for anything.

Are fishing sunglasses necessary? I see a lot of anglers with sunglasses on. I wear prescription glasses unfortunately so if I were to get sunglasses they’d have to be prescribed. But I wanted to know how useful they actually are, any thoughts?

Lots of eye burning reflection off the water. Good sun glasses are important.
You’re not going to find a better pair of polarized sunglasses than Maui Jim’s. And they come in prescription. Depending upon the style they’ll run $200-$500
You can buy a lot of $10 a pair polorized or even $5 a pair Yum brand or $3.89 a pair Ozark Trail polorized sunglasses for that $500. And yes I do have a good pair of Maui Jim's for dressup. Cheaps for losing or sitting on while fishing. Try the cheaps , they do work
Questions is - how strong is the UV Protection with these cheap in expensive Sun Glasses?. In this case I need to protect my Eyes not my pocket so, I will spend the extra dollars for the extra Protection..

Both the Yum and Ozark Trail are quite good. Spend the $5 and experience it for yourself.
We all should wear sunglasses whenever we are in the sun, on water or not. As was mentioned, UV is damaging to eyes and exposure is cumulative.
Protect your eyes by wearing good sunglasses! I use them always while on the water or fishing period.
