Sailfish are too noble a fish to ever keep and eat as are Marlin. Just m2cw.

That's a pretty serious statement there. I'll need to chew on it, see if I can digest it. I've never thought of fish as being noble or possessing any form of dignity. If I did, I don't think I would be able to fish at all. That raises all kinds of questions. How can a marlin or a sailfish be any more noble than a walleye or a salmon? I've never caught a marlin but I have eaten them. They're pretty good. Thank you sir. You've given us all something to think about.

Sailfish are great smoked. That's the only way I have ever eating them. Never had any Marlin.

I think the nobility,IMHO, lies in how long it takes for a fish to get to the size they are, as well as how many are available to be caught. Kind of a judgement call. Like why I release any striper I catch over 36 inches but if a flounder is legal it's dinner. It's more fun to catch them than eat them. But that's just me, no judgement intended.

I've probably caught 5000 Walleye (I come from where the Detroit River dumps into Lake Erie) and all under 6lbs got eaten all over got released. I think what I meant is the battle you got sort of determines the nobility of the fish in my quickly escaping mind. I have never caught a nice Marlin but I have caught a nice sailfish and in my mind he deserved to be released because he was such a great fighter. I caught a 7 lb smallmouth once and had it in my live well most of the day and it finally drove me crazy because of how he fought so I released it. I just couldn't keep him. Does any of that make sense?

Absolutely. And I know that I can sometimes come off as sort of a smarta**, but not this time. I respect all views (well most) and I surely do believe that if we are going to catch fish we should show them all respect. How much I certainly leave to the individual. I've eaten a lot of my catches in my day. I no longer do, I'm a c&r guy now, as much as possible. But that's more a matter of my convenience than of any regard for the fish. Fish are born into this world and fish die. That's a fact. How you or I fit into that equation is certainly food for thought. Thank you.

being an off shore fisherman I have played with many of the billfish ( Marlin, swords, sails) that are part of our sport. I actually ate my first white marlin (considered inedible) but a fine chef told me how to prepare it and cook it. It tasted like a piece of candy and was the reason my wife let me go "marlin" fishing for years. these fish have an attitude, look on youtube for the number of people that have been injured when one of them comes right at the boat! experienced it myself in Cabo san Lucas got the hell out of the way when I figured where he was goin. nobility is an appropriate description of any Billfish.
