Trying to spool an open faced reel, having issues

Never been fishing, bought a rod and I'm trying to spool the line. All of the tutorials say to tie it, close the bale and start reeling-- but, when I close the bale, the handle won't turn (can't reel)

Lost!

Honestly. That is the hardest type of reel to spool Up. I would strongly recommend getting it spoiled by someone you know with the experience or just paying a shop. Most places will spool line for free if you buy from them.

If you do it wrong it will slip and you’ll be screwed.

Hold the knot down for the first couple rotations otherwise it will turn with the redt of the bail

With the bale open, the part where the line is tied to doesn't even spin- but I can reel freely. When the bale is closed, I can't reel, like it's locked

With the bail down you shoould be able to reel. Maybe switch the handle to the other side to make it more comfortable

When I turn it harder the handle flips back (open), I just don't get this at all

You should be pushing up and over the handle. When its at the bottom you pull, when its at the top you push away from yourself

OK lets start at the begining. You thread the line from the top on the rod down to the reel. Open the Bali and tie the line on the spool. I wrap the line 3-4 times around the spool and tighten it up then tie the knot. Now when you crack the handle the bail should close and start wrapping the line. If it will not move turn the handle the other way. Does the Bail Close now? Most of the reels have a toggle to allow you to reel backwards(loosening) or forward only to bring the line to the reel. If this is NOT what's happening take it back where you bought it and return it, if they can't make it right.

Forget the line. I think you are trying to turn against the anti reverse. Re read the reel instructions.

Sounds to me like he is holding reel upside down and trying to reel it. That means he is trying to reel backwards against the anti reverse cog. Being new to fishing he may have assumed that the spinning reel should be on top of the rod, not under the rod which we all know is where it goes.

Hey Risky, you are new to fishing. So a quick lesson..... bait casting reels mount on top of the rod handle, spin casting reels mount on the bottom of the rod handle. That’s most important. If you have the reel mounted Correctly and you’re still having this problem take it back to where you bought it and either have them spool the line or give you your money back and go to Cabellas or Sportsman’s Warehouse . They will take good care of you.

Send a picture of your setup. From your description I think you are tying to the wrong part. A picture will tell us a lot. DeeJay.
