A dog fish is a common shark on the east coast. We get them from the surf all the time. They come in two versions, smooth and spiny. The spiny has a spike about an inch or two long on the front of the two dorsal fins. The big thing is no teeth. I've caught them up to about five feet long and they do fight hard.

Some folks call dogfish sand sharks. Since cod went into a disappearing act many English fish and chip sho[ps serve 'dogfish'. They are a plague here in the New York Bight.

At the Jersey Shore they are also known as Sand Sharks. Biggest I ever caught was four footer. Fought like h3ll. Skin feels like sandpaper.

Yeah JJ most sharks have sandpaper skin. That's how Makos get away,they roll up on your leader and their skin wears through your line.

Yeah G and the best fighting, they do a great tarpon/salmon imitation. But by a 100,,200,,300lb fish. I've never caught one, but seen them flying in person and on a friend's home video. They are insane! When properly iced and prepared Mako Steaks are excellent!

On the Chesapeake Bay we call them sand sharks. They are a fairly small shark who are usually a nuisance. They get up to three or feet long, have a mouth full of many but small and sharp teeth. Bait stealers when you don't hook them. Mike
