Howdy gentlemen. New to the forum here. I've started exploring strange land of LA county fishing which is completely different for a backwoods Kentucky boy. The last 5 outings of fishing with wife, kids have ended with zero bites and zero fish. I've only explored lakes and park ponds. I'm getting an itch for venturing out into the ocean. The kids are pretty discouraged with the freshwater and so am I. I look forward to learning from the network of greybeards and wiseguys here at the Stage. Take care and good luck.

Malibu Pier is fun. The Barge in Orange County. Huntington and Redondo Piers. We used to go on a Friday evening. Take a tall sixpack and a fishing rod. The Mexican guys on Redondo Pier would bait our rods. They just wanted the Mackerel. I didn't care. Fun fishing though. Google all those locations. The coolest for a little investment was the Barge. Boat takes you out to a barge that is anchored over a shipwreck that has become a reef. Its less money than going on a charter boat.

Welcome, public fishing piers don't require a license.
Some jetties no licenses is required either. But jetties have strange rules about that. Check with someone who knows about the jetties. Bait shops would be a good place. California state fishing rule book sometimes you need to be a lawyer to understand it. LOL.

Lots of places down there to fish for surf perch - pretty easy to catch, don't get real big, and very tasty if you like to eat your catch. Kids would love it. I'm with you, avoid the fresh water.

Some saltwater fish you just don't want to lip.
Even the saltwater bass here can make your thumb rough.

Welcome to the Forum, OLA. You are going to have to do research and talk to the local fishermen. Do you work with or live near any fishermen? Talk to the bait shops. Join a local fishing forum. Good Luck!

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. Sounds like I should definitely start fishing the ocean. I'll make this my new objective for this weekend. I'll look into the barge, @Jeremy, it can't get any worse. I need to pick up some gear from a local fishing store so I'll ask some questions. Thanks again guys look forward to learning from yall.
