Lbs/yds on reels mandatory?

I’ve been fishing since I was a kid and I was wondering if you always have to exactly follow line poundage as listed on the reel. I just got a new heavy rod and reel for fishing guntersville lake. I’ve lost quite a few 8+ pound bass on my normal 10 pound line and my new reel only goes up to 15 but I want to put 20 pound on it. Will this damage the reel or rod? Will I be able to cast my normal distance? Every website says something different so I’m just gonna ask other fisherman.

You won't see a noticeable difference. The weakest point on the line is the knot, so working on tying them will help, as will having your drag set correctly.

Just put 20 and dont worry. A lot of these markings mostly refer to spool capacity, mechanism is very similar from size to size. For example, i have daiwa certate 2508pe, which assumes i am going to use pe #0.8 lines, but i have two spools one very thin for long casts #0.4, and one 1# for tough jigging. In lb they vary from manufacturer but generally that #1 is about 20+lb and #0.4 is about 10lb.

You’ll be fine with 20lb test. You won’t be able to spool as much line onto the reel. But even 20lb braid has such a small diameter that it shouldn’t be a deal breaker. Since I don’t know your exact setup, that would be the only thing I’d be concerned about. You’ll also lose a little casting distance. There are videos on YouTube of people casting different test braids with identical rods/reels.

You can get around this by making the switch to braid. 50lb braid Is the same diameter as 12lb mono

There's your good advice. Along with make sure your knots are good like Monty said. You should be good as gold.

I use 20lb braid all the time. Works well.

On Guntersville I'd go braid, it'll cut through some of the weeds the Mono won't.

Braid is what I always use for big fish Mainline to swivels wobblers huge salmon spinning stuff etc then Mono Leaders with bait. If your not going to go Braided. Get high quality Mono or Fluorocarbon. These days you can get line that is 20lb that is probably the diameter of yesterdays 8 lb. I remember when Spiderwire came out many years ago with line that was 1\2 its test strength diameter for comparable line now many companies are on the bandwagon.

Go with braid, smaller diameter for further casting and heavier strength for the bigger fish.

A whole lot less stretch with braid as well, which will help to pull them big ones out of that thick grass.
