I'm the only one on the pond in my canoe. There is light wind and a slight ripple on the water. All of a sudden out in front of me there are large waves of the size that a large boat would create. Only there is no boat. Does anyone know what causes that?

Earthquakes have been known to produce waves...

You sure you were alone on the lake?

If nobody is anywhere within audible range there wouldn't be anyone to hear it.

Had it happen to me when I was fishing in big water in Canada with three other teachers, You know that they have all of the answers. Well,,,,,,, anyway and anyhow, We saw this big wave come across the center of the lake about 75 yards out from us. I had pointed it out and said: "what in the he!! is that". Larry, who reads a lot but is not a fisherman or a navy man, looked up and said "that a rogue wave", So what's a "rogue wave", "I don't know, they just happen". Then he caught a walleye and the discussion ended. I'll have to ask him sometime during "beer time", he probably won't remember, he is losing it. Anyway, I think they do happen, but I don't know why. There weren't any other boats or subs around. Anyone else ever see them?

A similiar incident happened to me once when I was fishing in my boat with some friends. We were out in a bay in Louisiana and suddenly about 50 yards away was this sudden geyser of water at first about 2 ft tall and maybe 6 to 8 inches in diameter, out in the middle of nowhere. There was no sign of drilling, anything. We motored closer for a better look but remained at some distance, due to the unknown cause or effect. Never did get an explaination. Just Sayin...RJS
