Get Penn 320 baitcaster and spool it with 30 lbs braided of Stren or Pro-line. Use a 100 lb. rated swivel with 50lbs. shock leader about 2 ft. For blues, use a 18" steel leader. Rod, l recommend Ugly Stick med-heavy weight. Good luck and tight lines!

Absolutely. I purchased all 3 of the reels I mentioned; a Shimano, Penn Senator and Abu Garcia. The Shimano locked up on a snook (8-10#) and the Penn locked up on a large tarpon. Both on the same trip to the Florida keys. I took them apart and all the internals were plastic. I returned them with receipt to Walmart and they would not warranty them nor refund my money. On the same trip, a Good Year tire exploded and came apart on the Interstate. I got the same bad news and so I went to Good year and same sad news. By the way, look it up on the Internet and you will find all kinds of stories about it.

You must have gotten them at WalMart; theirs must be especially made for them in China. Cheap, cheap and cheap.
I did and you are correct, they are cheap, cheap, cheap but everyone else must be fishing for tadpoles in a ditch because they claim I don't know what I am talking about. I am talking from experience. Ever had a live mullet on a flat line and have a 180 pound tarpon hit it and take off? Well I am here to tell everyone, a true Penn 750 will hold up but a Walmart Penn 750 will melt all of the gears, break the spindle and you will lose your nice fish. Same thing happened on the same trip with a nice snook and a Shimano barrel reel bought from you guessed it; Walmart! Locked up and all the internal gears were plastic.
Last time I looked, the only Penn reels still made in USA were Internationals and Senators. All the rest are made in China.
Fished with sheakspere from ultra to heavy out of walmart never had a problem caught fish from 1 to 150 lb. Like they say in my town it is not the arrow what matters is the Indian shooting it . If you know what you are doing and don't get to excited you can land a 100 lb fish with a 25 dollars walmart combo. Good luck, keep on fishing.
Try an Inshore rod.... MH or H.... fast action....reel
Either 3000 or 4000. Could get a 2500 but it would be Maxed out.. Penn makes decent combos for $100 or less on sale.... tight lines

Remember the day my dad brought a Zebco 202 home from Wild Willie's in Topeka KS. We thought we had died and gone to heaven. Think he paid $2.98 for it, but back in '62 that was a lot to us. We, 4 boys, had to share it. Oh, those were the days my friend.
I have used Zebco 33 reels and rods from walmart for many years and have never had a problem. Last week I caught several catfish that weighed over 9 pounds using Zebco 33 with 10 pound test line. I use a micro zebco for bluegill and crappie and, again, have not had any problems. I am not fishing for monsters and it is all freshwater fishing but I still have fun, which is what it is all supposed to be about.
fish the hell outta it...if it craps out buy a better one
bass pro shops are at least as price competitive as walmart sometimes cheaper and staff standing by to help

I picked up an R2F Surf & Pier combo at Walmart and it was one of the mid range rod and reel combos (about 30-40 bucks)... I was wondering if this was a good buy or if I should look for rods and reels separately? I got the surf and pier as that’s what I’m mostly going to be fishing is saltwater off the pier. Tried looking up specs on this thing but they are few and far between.
The little bit of specs I could find are in the link below... If this rod & reel combo ends up being trash, what should I look for? We get a lot of Striped Bass and Bluefish by where I’m at.

I’ve picked up stuff like that for the grandkids and they caught fish with it. You don’t always get what you pay for by spending a ton of money. I’ve bought $300.00 rods and $300.00 reels before. Some were ok, some were junk. If it catches fish it’s worth buying in my opinion.
Hey guys excuse me for sticking my nose where it don't belong but pls cut the bickering back and forth out. You are grown men not 10 yr old boys. This is "Mutha Superior Speaking" cheerio:)
If you are fishing with a boat rod all you need is a 7 or 8 foot in the med to heavy style with a 300 size reel and 20lb test or up line it is your choice. I use a 6.6 med/heavy bass rod with a shimano curado and only 14lb test line and bring in a 20lb striper is no problem at all. For bait fishing in a boat you will want to go with a bigger setup like the 7 or 8 foot rod and the bigger reel and line as you will be casting a heavy sinker and hook.
Be sure to save all this paperwork with the equipment because when you become that master angler with all the sponsorship signs painted on your hugh, high-powered boat and drones with cameras following your every move and oh, all of the prettiest women, they'll be worth a fortune and we'll be saying, "I knew that one when....".
