I'm not that guy either. Take as good a photo as possible, mount that on the wall. I've always heard the bigger fish are the breeders. Let em make some more fish. If I need a few to eat, harvest the smaller ones. That's just me. I don't begrudge anyone their fish, long as it's legal.

I'm with you Spirit

I wouldn't mount a fish if it was so big I had to tow it to the bank with a log chain. Same with deer. I just have no desire to display anything. I'm not saying it's wrong, it's just something that doesn't appeal to me personally. If you like it, go for it,

Nowadays fiberglass replica is the way to go. Measure length, girth, and take 2 or 3 good quality photos. These guys can airbrush an amazing likeness. One that I would recommend is Global Fishmounts. I've seen some amazing ones from them.

Just a plain ol' CNR fisherman here. As for mounting a fish...how long before the good woman says she's tired of dusting it?

In Wyoming, I spoke to G&F biologists regarding large female walleye in Keyhole Res. They said and it was also printed, the very large female walleye do not produce in this reservoir. They prefer that fisherman do not release large fish. They are predators of all fry in the res. All the tournament walleye fishers typically still release the large fish for future tourneys. Mine have always been released.

Take the pics. And put the pics on the wall or in a frame. The rest r all dust collectors. And closet dwellers. Plus much cheaper. Many times guys tell them to make the repos bigger than the pics anyway. So then those kind off lose credibility. It’s only a stinking fish anyway. Put a repo of ur ex wife or girlfriend on the wall And use for spinner bait practice ! 😁😁

When do you say,ok,I should release this fish but I should mount it for my wall. Is there a weight that would sway you?

Take a quick photo, turn it loose and get a reproduction. That’s what most people do now.

Back when I was around 22 years of age I caught a huge LM bass in a farm pond. Of course i was excited & my cousin assured me i needed to have it mounted. Caught it on a red & white bomber. I had nothing to put the fish in, I was in my pickup. I had an extra pair of bluejeans & soaked them in the pond water & wrapped the fish up in them. I had to drive about 35 miles to a bait shop that had a freezer one could put a fish in & the taxidermist came by periodically & picked the fish up. For real. When I got to the bait shop my fish weighed 11 pounds 9 ounces. The bait shop guy wrapped the fish in seran wrap & stuck it in the freezer. He told me if I'd have kept the fish in water it would easily have weighed 12 pounds. By the time I left the pond & drove home to show my dad the fish then drove to the bait shop the fish was dried out some. Anyway, before the fish was mounted it was seriously damaged somehow & I never got a good explanation. Now, i wouldn't mount a fish for any reason. That's my story & I'm sticking to it.

Great idea! Problem. I don't have an ex. Been married to my present wife for 52 years. Maybe if she goes before I do I can have her stuffed and mounted. Pull her finger and............ok, let's not go there. She's reading over my shoulder and chuckling. That's not usually a good thing.

In today's taxidermy world, all they need is a few good photos and the measurements and they can make one just like it for the wall.

I have a 48 pound tarpon that I caught on 6 pound test line and a 6 foot hammer head shark that my wife caught on 20 pound test line and wanted mounted. They are on my fireplace and on my wall respectively. I also have fiberglass trout (6 of them) on the top of my TV cabinet and wall. Did not catch them but purchased online.

Do you have a good story for them? My neighbor has a small bull elk shoulder mount on his wall. He says it’s a bull he got on a hunt in Wyoming. Which is true to a point. The part he don’t tell is the outfitter got it for him while he was in the hospital with a broken leg from falling off of a horse 3 days prior to the outfitter filling his own tag and giving him the head to mount. Not a bad bull but it has a story not told by the owner of the mount. 🤦‍♂️
