I recently saw a video that showed that largemouth bass saw the colors black, red, green and white. I would suspect that other species are very similar.

I have found color makes a major difference. The question is hard to answer as it depends upon the type fish, water color, depth, weather etc. My go starting color using plugs for NW smallies has become the fire tiger perch pattern. Wacky worms I start with pumpkin. Try fishing a light blue or red fly during a caddis hatch. after a short time, you will definitely switch to the natural color your buddy is using and catching fish. Surprise, you are now also catching fish. "Match the hatch" usually applies to large lures as well as small flies. Before anyone goes off, There are exceptions and unexplained anomalies. It applies to most fish from bluegill to halibut. RTKF

Depends on the lure.

My favorite color lure is the one that gets the most bites on THAT day or time. Color does matter a lot sometimes. On other days it seems to make no difference. It seems to me that when the color matters the most is on the days when the fish don't seem to be biting fast. On those days the color can make the difference between getting skunked and bringing in a nice stringer of fish. My first color to try depends on the water depth that I am fishing and the water clarity.

To start I usually go with lighter colors on or near the surface and then move to darker colors as I go deeper. White and chartreuse on top, gold and bass colors like a slightly darker green and then purples and darker greens and blues on or near the bottom. If that doesn't work I start hunting what the color of the day is at different depths. I often do this with spinnerbaits, curly tail grubs and plastic worms because they are less expensive and faster to change the color of the plastic part of the bait. Once I find them I may shift to crankbaits in similar colors.

I bought one of those color selectors years ago. Battery powered probe you drop in the water after you compute the water clarity, temperature, depth, and species. It’s buried in the garage somewhere if anyone’s interested in buying.

plumbob nailed it. Darker coolers in darker water and lighter colors is clearer water is the rule, and of course all rules were made to be broken.

When it comes to worms black, spinner bait chartreuse and white, top water green and yellow mix/ war horse, or baby Zara. If I go fishing you can bet these will be with me. Good fishing and be safe 🐟
