Hey yall! Hoping you and your families are still all doing well and staying safe!

Were able to get out and do a little white perch fishing the other day, which was a nice switch up! We included some of the basics for anyone that may be new to targeting perch. When they are biting it's one of my favorite species to target because it's all day action!

Stay safe and tight lines everyone!

Second or third cousin to Stripers...the two make a great freshwater hybrid.

Many people in western NY call them white bass. The difference is that white perch have a purple throat. Not as good eating as many other fish. Certainly not as good as a yellow perch.

If you caught that fish in fresh water, it is a white bass, or we also call a sand bass. They are related to striped bass, and I suspect will cross breed. Both species school in the spring to spawn by going up stream of lakes or rivers.

They are fond of gizzard shad. In Texas, they aren't hard to catch once you find them. In the winters they school deep, and usually can be found around deep points, in say 20 to 40 ft of water. You find gizzard shad, you have also found white bass! Just Sayin...RJS

In Colorado and probably other places they cross the White Bass with the Striper to get a Hybrid bass called the Wiper. Distinguished by the broken lines on the sides. They fight really good. Remember getting into them one time trolling. Had the young kids with me and they caught until they couldn't reel them in anymore, arms were aching and asked to quit. Alway will remember that day.

Only recently last year or two got into the white bass from a kayak. What a blast that is. Waiting for the "stay at home / Shelter in place" order to end so I can get out.

White bass (Morone chrysops) and white perch (Morone americana) are distinct species, although of the same genus as striped bass. White bass are strictly freshwater and white perch are found in salt, brackish and fresh.

A CO in New York state showed me a white perch from Chautauqua Lake which is fresh water. He pointed out the violet throat and said that is proof that it is a white perch. Definitely not salt water, and I caught many in Oneida Lake which is also fresh water.

Obviously we are talking about different fish. The picture of a white perch that you posted, looks much different than the white perch I know. The shape is similar but the fish we call white perch does not have any of the greenish color along the back. It is more like the picture of the fish above it, but has a violet colored throat.
