If you were forced to fish for only one species for the rest of your life, which one?

If I had to fish for only one species, for me it would be the beautiful rainbow trout, mainly for the environs in which it is found and for its willingness to fight. If I had to fish for food, it would probably be for walleye. Why walleye ? Come on !! Have you ever tasted a fried walleye filet ?! Anyway, that's my choice. How about you ? Which and why ?

The Perch is considered the best tasting fish in fresh water and I agree. The problem is that in my area of Central Minnesota it is rare to catch a perch big enough to be worth cleaning. That brings me to the colorful sunfish! Hands down that is my favorite! Crappies second, walleyes a distant third. For flavor it is hard to beat a sunfish and walleyes resemble eating a piece of cardboard if not prepared in a way to avoid that. Of course, a smaller version of each taste better than a larger version. A 1/3 to 1/2 lb. sunfish is ideal and when it comes to crappies I wouldn't go much bigger that 3/4 lb. Walleyes under 3 lbs. are also the best eating. I fry my fish in peanut oil and a good breading in a deep fat fryer. The way I enjoy walleye the best is frying the fillets in butter in a frying pan, applying butter to bread and making a walleye sandwich. I many times give the walleyes away and eat the sunfish and crappies. To each their own!

Catfish are easy to catch and tasty. If it was for food, that would be my choice. If it was for all things considered, environment, fight and sport....King Salmon in AK

Catch freshwater salmon any kind depending on age of fisherperson.
Eat toss up between walleye and perch.

As far as the enjoyment of catching a fish, it would have to be a salmon, any of the five types found anywhere in the U.S. Their endurance is unbelievable, they are never beat. As far as taste of a freshwater fish, it would have to be a walleye, up to about 20". A nice sized perch would be a strong second. Of the saltwater fish, it would be a red snapper, again the smaller ones. However, nothing beats the taste of a lobster. As with any food, the preparation is the key to good taste. (MHO).

If to eat only, Crappie
If for sport, Smallmouth/Largemouth Bass, catch and release.
Artificial baits only.

Steelhead. Unless your catch is all you have to eat. They are a wonderful fish, a blast to catch and they taste great, but there's a reason they call it the "fish of 1,000 casts" (or is it 10,000 casts)?

For the simple pleasure of sitting on a bank, under a shade tree and spending a dollar for each trips bait and a good fight, i’d Choose carp fishing

very interesting discussion. I love catching just about everything, but for eating- no way do you beat yellow perch!

striped bass - no contest. great to eat but catch & release way to go. Stripers 50+ pounds come right into the NJ surf.
