I always am looking out of corner of my eye & notice if anyone is catching anything. Sometimes I'll ask them what kind of bait they're using and most of the time they'll say creek chubs. Well, I don't fish with live bait, but when they leave that area, I'll go over and try with lures.

Sometimes those answers are right on, you just didn't understand what they were saying. The man who taught me the most would tell me things that didn't work for me. I didn't have enough knowledge to understand what he was saying. Remembering those conversations years later i realized that he was truthful. Im still learning from him today, he is in mid 80's, I'm 71. Re analize what they said and apply the knowledge that you have now, some of those tips you'll realize were true. The only reason i would not tell someone how I was catching fish, if I were fishing a tournament in the next few days. I will tell them afterwards, truthfully. Good luck. DEEJAY

A friend of mine, that caught more than his share of big fish, told me that lots of people would ask him how he catches so many, and his reply was a question back to them. "When was the last time you tried to catch one? " They just don't bite unless you have a hook in the water!! And sometimes even the slowest days there is that one that just happens to take your lure.

Never a truer statement made. I had guys asking me how I was turning in so many pikeminnow when they weren’t. I simply replied “ they ain’t gonna jump out the river and come up to your camper when it’s raining. I fish in the rain. Ya almost have to have your line in the water if ya wanna catch fish”.

Yep...the more I fish the more fish I catch...the less I fish the less fish I catch...people give up way too soon.
Plus the more you fish the more you learn about how to catch those so elusive fishes...

It is truly rampant, how many folks feel empowered and self-righteous, once they acquire the proper look and gear. I recall a fly guy in spendy waders and jacket, holding a combo that cost more than my whole collection of fly rods..... can't cast for s*#t, scaring the entire hole by his inept movements, throwing topwater trout flies(!&?), come sloshing out towards me, sayin'... "I don't think the Steelhead have made it up this far, yet".... get in his Landrover and leave.....DAMN GOOD RIDDANCE !, we cheer....and proceeded to pull two nice Steelies from the hole... neither a fin-clipped keeper, but a good day, anyway.
An awful lot like the guys with complete sports team fan outfit, hat, shirt, jacket, maybe even shoes..... can't name more than three players on the team !
We outwardly chuckle, we privately scorn....and we keep at it... it's okay to be wise within, and wait for others to notice our successes....they will come.

Some old timers have a lot of savvy they will share. Others either don't know or won't tell. What I call the dude fishermen seldom have a stain or rip on their clothing. They almost never have an obviously old rod, or reel, which means to me they haven't fished enough to have a favorite.

I liken them to Kipling's Bandar Log. The monkeys in the Jungle Book who were the wisest and best and most wonderful. They know it is true, because they keep saying so.

Well Rusty, I’ll tell ya it goes back to the old Navy saying; “Loose lips, sink ships.” Otherwise a hot bite or lake won’t stay that way long.

They don't want you to catch their fish.

I think Pickle has nailed it. Never trust the ‘GQ” fisherman. He’s definitely compensating. I trust the guy with 50 yr. old gear that silently and humbly just catches fish. I remember when I was in college and one summer was fishing at the stocked ponds at Cherokee, NC. My roommate was an avid fly fishing trout fisherman that tied his own flies and paid for college winning fishing tournaments. He gave me a cheap little spinning combo and a $.15 little can of niblets corn and I totally slayed the trout in that pond. There were guys with thousand dollar rigs out there ready to drown me but I just silently kept catching trout. I totally enjoyed myself! Those guys who spent all that money had listened to tackle dealers wanting to soak them. Looking the part in your own mind never catches fish! My best advice is take the time to make real friends who have genuine fishing experience. Relationships matter and are always worth cultivating. It takes time!

when you see an old-timer out on the water in a beat-up boat scroungy looking, not in a hurry while he's fishing NOW THATS THE GUY YOU WANT TO TALK TO, them $ fifty thousand dollar boats with all the new equipment and $ 5oo.oo dollar rods & reels don't catch fish 90 percent of the fish are in 25% of the water .there's no substitute for years of experience & time on the water!
