Rotten bait left in my van - help! tips are very welcome
New fisherman, left some shrimp in my van for two weeks. I only use it for camping and fishing. so when i opened the door, you can imagine the smell.
I've tried water and vinegar spray, baking soda, charcoal in a bowl, fabreeze, glade room freshener and new car smell in a can. the result a new array of smells and yes a still lingering rotten fish smell.
Any ideas, or products to recommend?
Thanks, wife is none to happy that i just stunk up our recently purchased conversion van. Especially since she likes to camp and it is a little rough to stay in all night.

No expert but ive left bait (24 hours) in my car before. Air it out. Leave everything open for as long as you can. Get Ozium air sanitizer, and wash everything. It's probably going to take a while.

I went away for business once and left a styrofoam container of worms under the seat of my Jeep. It was pretty nasty so I took the roof and the doors off and let it sit outside in the drive shed.

Ozium car detailing spray, it absorbs scent and hammers a new scent into the fabric... i reccomend the original. Also works really well for more greener smells.

Put an open bowl of vinegar in the van on the floor. Let us sit close up for a few days - air tight. Once a few days have passed, take the vinegar and toss it.
The vinegar will absorb the scent and while your van may smell like vinegar for a day or so, the vinegar scent will dissipate and you’ll be back to normal.

Fill it full of wood, and burn it.!!! Lol you might out a fan in there with doors and windows open after the vinager treatment. And from now on tell your wife to not do that again.lol😂🤣😂🤣
I hear that baking soda absorbs odors, I know my wife keeps an open box in the reefer. Go to Sam's Club or Costco and buy you a 55 gallon drum of it and sprinkle it (shovel it) around in there and let it do its magic. Or I like egg's idea - have a bonfire.
If you have a keen sense of smell then you just might be out of luck; the smell could persist--for you--for weeks, months or even years. Try putting Vick's Vap-O-Rub on your upper lip, like in "Silence of the Lambs."
Me thinks yah might wanna buy box cheap
Moth balls, try dem or yah might wanna try cheap box of fabreeze type sprsy, finally I’d use a box of dem fabric things u throw in da dryer. If none of dis works drive de thing to town and leave Keyes in place where Dey can be seen.
I’d try the vinegar, baking soda, etc. then buy yourself some peppermint oil off Amazon, pour it in a small ‘Tupperware’ container with a slot cut into the top for a short wick for an oil lamp or maybe just fabric. The peppermint will help cover up anything left, wife will love you again.
The solution to pollution is dilution. Get a couple of box fans, open the vehicle doors, spray down the interior with a light mist of plain water and cheap vodka (vodka absorbs odors and evaporates pretty fast), turn on the fans and air it out. Repeat as necessary. If you have cloth seats, it's going to take a while. Scents will not necessarily "eliminate" odors, only mask them as long as the source of the odor still exists, so make sure every last putrid bit of shrimp is gone. Good luck.

New fisherman, left some shrimp in my van for two ... (
show quote)
Go to your local Funeral Home and ask the Director to give you (or buy) the deodorant they use.
Had a Skunk let go in my basement years ago and my Funeral Director Friend gave me a small bottle of stuff that eliminated the odor with only a few drops.

Unless you've got a friend in the mortuary business, be ready to answer some questions. And be sure your wife is safe and secure for at least the following five years. "Lucy, you got some splainin to do!"
checkout ozone treatment. Some car detailers may have an ozone generator which produces ozone which can destroy most odors. Ozone's chemical structure is O3 which breaks down to O2(oxygen) and O. The O is a strong oxidizing agent which attacks organic chemical structures as well as bacteria which are the causes of the odor problem. It will do know damage to the car but will break down the chemical structures as well as any active bacteria that may be part of the cause generating the odor.
