Somewhere in the past I saw someone made homemade fishing lures by bending a beer bottle cap, drilling a hole at each end, attaching hook to one end and split ring to other. Anyone seen or have done this. How to hold split ring? Any luck catching fishing?

Welcome to the fishing stage squarehead. Where are you? Please add your location to your profile so we don't have to ask each time you post. I have heard of this, seen pictures, but have never used one. Don't know why it wouldn't work.

I reeled up a coho salmon with a banana weight crossways in its mouth, mooching the bar in Coos Bay, Oregon 1000 years ago.

howdy to all, I live in Hockley, Texas. Air Force veteran, early warning radar tech., work 38 years afterward in electronics and instrumentation, and then life insurance sales. Started fishing with my dad at very early age. He was a trot line fisherman, used chicken guts for bait, guess who had to tear the guts in fish bait length.

Gives rise to the old saying, give a man a fish feed him for a day, teach a man to fish feed him for a,lifetime. Trot lining is almost a lost art. Illegal, here. Welcome, square head glad you are among us.

I have a friend who cuts off the handles of spoons and creates lures from them. And I have caught fish on his homemade lures.

Welcome squarehead, when we were kids and ran out of bait one time started digging around the bank for worms. Couldn't find any but I saw some small white roots figured hey, we caught bluegill on them, go figure, true story

Well if you can catch fish with a beer bottle cap, maybe all those cheap China lures I ordered will work for me.

Coos Bay...great place for spear fishing...at least it was 1000 years ago...just be careful during seal breeding season...they don't like you getting around their pups...plus the seals would steal the fish off the spear or off your line if lucky enough to get it on the line & off the spear.
