Hey salt water gal, welcome from another pretty new newbie! I lived in Corpus Christi for 16 years. Where do you intend to fish, the surf, or the laguna and bays? Do you wade or boat fish? if in a shallow water boat, lots of water in the area called the boat hole north of the Kennedy causeway north to Corpus Christi bay and the shallows east of Shamrock island half way between the south and north tnd of mustang island. I fished these water all the time and took many fish from there. There's a channel the comes close to the highway to launch a boat, or it's an easy run from the boat hole to there. Anywhere south of the causeway, in the area around the power plant, and down along the KIng Ranch is also productive.
My primary lure for reds, speckled trout, flounder, and many other species, was a plain strawberry red shrimp tail, with a dark red 1/4 oz jig head, sometimes used in conjunction with the shrimp tail is an unweighted small popping cork, use it with the pointed end pointing toward your pole, chugging/popping noises will spook red fish, but the action of the popping cork reversed will attract reds, i've used it this way and had a red take the popping cork and another the lure. work the lure in a twitching motion and you will catch fish if done properly.
For flounder, cut the shrimp tail off back at the second ring, puts the hook closer to the tail so flounder will get the hook! Work it in a jigging motion along the sides of the oil company's channel, from top lip down the drop off, and a short distance toward the center of the channel.
If any of you folks go down to the Corpus area, and you want to get some shrimp and oysters to take home, gp tp the bait stations, (humble channel bridge on the causeway for one) and ask them what time they get their bait in the morning and if they will sell you what you want, You'll get live shrimp, the only drawback will be that you're going to get various sizes, but you might get lucky and get a bunch of large 8-10 inch ones, but those same shrimp may cost you up to $14-18 a pound down town on the "T" heads off the shrimp boats. Bait shrimp ARE eating shrimp, no difference!
Oyster you may get really good deals on if you go to Rockport where the oyster boats docks are. Boaters sell their catch off the back of their boats and will often sell the last few bushels at a greatly reduced price. Back when they were selling there catch for $14 a bushelon occasion we would get up to 2 1/2 bushels for $14 because the guy's are tired and want to go home!
Good luck and I know you'll have fun! Can't even give you a guess as to hom many over 30" trout I caught north of the cause way. And there's a spot in the boat hole I can tell you about that when a cold front comes through and drops the water temperature drastically that very large reds will congregate, upwards of 40", One time it took me and my fishing partner over 4 hours to catch three reds apiece under 28' long, most where over 40 inches!
