Egg, I did make a few rods several years back but now it seems like I can but a rod about as cheep as I can a blank. I'd love to get back into it but really don't have a source for discount blanks, If you steer me toward a distributor I might try my hand at it again

If any of you guys want to give it a shot go to Mudhole.com, they will set you up with any price rod you want. Their top of the line rods are almost as good as G.loomis or St. Croix. They are a company out of the Orlando, FL. area and say that they build their own blanks. I think they build their better blanks but their cheaper blanks are shipped into the U.S. If you order one order a kit then it will come with everything that you will need and you will not have to order everything individually. A kit will not come with thread, epoxy, and whatnot unless you order a start-up kit. Mudhole will have everything that you will need. If you need help, just ask. I'm a retired rod crafter, but I still build rods for friends and relatives.

I wonder if St Croix will come out with the Legend Extreme in a fly rod line. They dropped their top flyrod the Legend Elite last year. I have both Legend Ultra(20yr old rod) and the Legend Elite and both are great.

Ivey, St. Croix rods make a very good rod and they do have a very good warranty. They need a good warranty because they do like to break, quite often with a fish on. As far as sensitivity, they are right up there with the best of them. I won't say which rod is the best, but I do not have any hesitation recommending a higher-priced St. Croix. Not the cheaper ones. I do not know where you got the idea these rods like to break. Generally, fishermen break rods, but as to the tendency for these rods to break, in forty years of fishing them, I have never seen one break.

These are great rods, as are G. Loomis rods. I am not sure I would spend $650 for one. I have many higher end St. Croix rods and am wondering how much better (if at all) they can get.

Most of my rods are Hurricanes, Calico Jack Series. Excellent rods, varied actions, from 7 ft to 7ft6in in length. Rods are extremely durable and I have never had any issues. Plus most of the Calico Jack line runs anywhere from $70 to $100

Falcon makes a very good rod, I've owned a couple of their bait casting rods.

I have a 6 1/2 ft st chroix that I use for wacky rigging & ned rigging. The rod is extremely sensitive & I can feel any hit or tap on my plastics. I have g loomis, fenwick & falcon rods that are real workhorse rods but lack the sensitivity of the st chroix. I think a lot of the new high modulus rods are more brittle than some older rods. I'm thinking about springing for a new Huckaby 8 ft crappie rod. They really have a lot of backbone & will pull a crappie out of a deep brushpile.i think the 10 ft model is just a tad long for me. They even make a 13 ft model. If I fished from the bank I'd jump on that 13 footer. Tight lines.

I have never broken a St Croix
I fish a lot
3 times a week for over a half a century
I have broken other brands
Usually as a result of abuse
If you inadvertently whack your rod against something hard it won’t appear that you compromised it until you really bend and stress the graphite windings, then snap.
It gets blamed on a fish but that’s not the case.
So I really really take care of my high end Legend Series St Croixs
