Fished Oregon, California, Kansas, Missouri, and Texas, mostly. Enjoyed fishing Corpus Christi, TX best. More species in one area: speckled trout + two sub-species, flounder, redfish, atlantic golden croaker, black drum, sheepshead, blue fish, whiting, florida pompano, blacktip shark, and many more, and all excellent eating! Plus lots of shrimp, crabs, oysters and clams, all easily obtainable. Lived 32 years in Texas, retired from Ft Hood Feb 1976, 16 years Killeen-Ft Hood area, 16 years Corpus Christi. Fished mostly in the Laguna Madre from causeway north to Corpus christi bay. If you go there, can give you pointers on how, where, and what (and how to use) to fish with, where to get the best shrimp, where to get oysters, buy, or get your own, and lots more. Ask and you shall receive!
I'm 79, Feeble of body, but still pretty strong of mind, especially when I can remember things! Losing more brain cells every day, so if you want to ask something, don't wait too long!

Welcome aboard the stage! Enjoy the ride. There are quite a few of us on here from Texas and I'm sure they will be chiming in shortly. Please go back into your profile and add your location so when you post we all can see it and we won't have to ask. Are you still able to get out and fish? I'm 72 and I get out there every chance I get. Can't get to some of the places that I'd like to get to, but I make do with what's within easy access.

Welcome to the Forum, old phogie. You are about middle-aged in comparison to the Forum members if that makes you feel any better. We Wintered in Port Aransas for three years and have probably fished the same waters as you have.. Yes, there is good fishing in that area. Please go back to your profile page and put your location down so that we know where are at, thank you!

Hey, Old Phogie. Welcome. I'm a bit younger, only 75 and in Austin, TX. Mostly bass fish and belong to two Christian based bass clubs plus a retiree group. Fished a small club tournament Saturday on Lake Bastrop just east of Austin. My partner was 77. We both caught limits and ended up mid pack of ten boats. Also fishing that day was a club from Kileen and one from Texas A&M. Ramp was pretty busy at launch but every one was courteous on the lake, which is sometimes not the case. I haven't had the opportunity to saltwater fish, mostly because with three tournaments a month plus fun fishing my wife thinks that's all I do. Anyway, good to have you on board and look forward to your stories and wisdom. Tight lines and fish all you can and when you can't, tell stories about it!

Good too have you in the forum OF. We have spent about 7 winters in Aransas PASS RV PAR and mostly fished the South jetty in Port Aransas and CHARLES’S PASTURE. Without having much experience fining salt water I can’t say I caught much to brag about. I wish I would have found you while we’re wintering there. At 82 and living about 1100 miles away can’t say we will making the trip again. We stayed home this winter. If we do go back I will be contacting you for your advice. Good health to you.

Guy's, sorry I don'r get on here real often, but I want to thank all of you for your great welcome! Will try to respond to all of you when I can.
For jplovich and any others who are interested, if and when you get a chance to return, or go to Corpus Christi area to fish, get yourself a small (2-3" long) styrofoam popping cork without lead in it, place it on your fishing line with the small, tapered end pointed toward your rod tip, and in shallow water, set it high enough above your lure to keep the lure just above the bottom. This will allow you to fish water as shallow as six inches deep up along the shore line where bait fish are often found, caught lots of reds and trout both there! Use a PLAIN strawberry red shrimp tail and a DARK red 1/4 oz jig head, learn to make it twitch and dart around (another reason for the popping cork! Watch it move!) and be prepared for red fish to take the popping cork as well as the lure! Happened to me many times. I only used the popping cork when I fished really shallow water, otherwise I just fished the shrimp tail. Top water lures, red, gold, blue colors work very well but are pretty expensive. The Johnson Silver Minnow weedless spoon 3/4 oz size in gold or black is good for reds but is also very good for dragging behind your boat while drift fishing, will catch reds and flounder. FISH the SHALLOWS, up to 3-4 ft deep for all fish.
Fish the shallows between Shamrock Island and West side of mustang island, around islands north of causeway to Mustang/Padre island, and all down along the King ranch shoreline and in the Laguna Madre south of the causeway.
A shallow draft boat is a necessity to fish the shallow waters effectively and to save you a lot of work if you run aground! I had a 12 ft with a 4 HP merc on it. Fished three of us out of it many times. Had to drag it across more than a 1/4 mile of mud flats once when I got caught when the tide went out.
I used the strawberry red shrimp tail almost exclusively for sixteen years and I guarantee you when fishing with and/or alongside others using their various lures, I would catch two to three times more fish than they would! Save your money, learn how to work the lure and I can assure you of more fish, and maybe much bigger one's also!
For retired military, you can rent boats from the recreation center on Corpus Christi Naval Air Station.
