Thanks for the enjoyment and wisdom of the forum.
I'm a well-seasoned senior living west of Orlando, FL - Lake county is dotted with hundreds of lakes.
I am 2 hours from the Gulf or Atlantic. I enjoy surf-fishing.
Recently I am learning to catch/release bass out of my 12 ft v-bottom Jon boat.
Question - What is a good sized motor to push the Jon quickly and safely with 2 people and the gear?
I look forward to a lot of enjoyment from the forum - and all the additional fish I will catch because of it

See what boat is rated for max Hp, thats what I would put on it. It will handle all load safely.

No plate on the boat. Your questions leads me to ... I can look up a new similar boat and see what it is rated. Thanks

Welcome to the stage dmountain any chance you could fill out the user profile so we know where you are talking about?

Also I have never seen a V bottom Jon boat. Only ones I have encountered are flat bottom. Can you post a pic please?

20-30 lbs of weight for each hp,so take the weight of your boat + you & gear that should get u in the ballpark. Thats just a general rule,i would still try to find more info on ur boat contact local marina

Is you fish alone I would put all your gear in the front to hold the front down. Like some of the other guys have said i would check the boat out front to back

I'm guessing you have a round bottom v bow Jon boat. I wouldn't put anything bigger than a 9.9 on it. It will probably push you faster than you want at wot.

Another thing I'm pretty sure the older 9.9 2-stroke are lighter than the newer 4-stroke models.

I had a V bottom 14' fiberglass criss craft with a 9.9 yamaha. Thought that boat was heavy enough to cut through the water with just me in the aft.

WRONG! Needed weight in the bow to keep get it on plane.

I had one like that, I put those rear stabilizers on the back that stick out about a foot.and put a 15 hp on mine. Took a heat gun took off the 15 and stuck on a 9.9 sticker. It hauled across the lake.
But then again I just sunk my 6×6 can am in the the lake. Don't do as I do.lol
