This morning, I have searching charts and information in regards to depth of downrigger and how blowback effects your depth
Does anyone have knowledge of a great chart or any ideas to calculate the blowback depth?
Just what is "blowback"....in regards to fishing, that is ?
Blow back is how far behind you your down rigger weights fall behind the boat.the further back they go due to speed, and the weight and size of the lure being fish.the farther back it swing the higher it rides in the water column, taking you above the intended zone. I don't know the formula to figure this out, but I did switch to Pancake weights.there flatter and cut thru the water staying under the boat better so you can see exactly where they are on your fish finder.
Most figure 10% @ 1. 5 to 2 MPH surface ! However some days underlying currents and wind conditions will vary this number !
So I used to put 100’ of cable out with 12# slim weight to attain 90’ ! My back machine kept track of ball depth !
I just use my fish finder to see where they are. I don’t know if any accurate chart because of current, speed, weight of down rigger ball etc. salt water and fresh water makes a difference also.
Your finder should be able to see them
lakemichiganangler.com has charts posted on this.
I also believe that Scotty downriggers also publishes blowback charts.
Hope they are helpful.
