I am traveling from Michigan, through Canada, into New York, then down to South Carolina. I’ll be making tons of stops along the way. What licensing would I need if I wanted to fish at some random spots? A new license for every State? For Canada? Can I bring my basic gear into Canada?

Any advice is helpful! Thanks!!

Local bait and tackle shops near you or outfitter stores. Each state might be different but I got a 72 hour when I was in Maine this past summer.

Always check to see if a temporary license is cheaper. If you’re going to be somewhere for a few days sometimes a nonresident annual is cheaper than multiple 72 hour licenses. Check each state. Also be aware that seasons and limits will be different in different states

Plake: Sounds like a terrific plan, Hoss! I suggest going to Google or Bing. Each game and fish department of each state will have a website. Some may even have closed seasons for certain species. Be careful about limits and sizes, you don't want to wind up in jail! Just Sayin, RJS

Walmarts are not my favorite place to get a license. They don't know squat.

Not only will you need a license in every state you plan to wet a hook you will need a passport for canada. You would be surprised how many people are turned around at the border for no passport. Have a grand time on your trip, I'm envious.

You can get a temporary license For British Columbia on line. Yes you will need a passport.
South Dakota sells licenses on line too.
I fished several spots inside Glacier Park in Montana five years ago. Interestingly, no license was required.
Enjoy your trip.

Check the states you're going to online. Many states you can buy your license online and many you can buy a temporary license 1, 3 or 7 days.

Geez Walmart sells fishing licenses? Not in my case. In fact good luck finding an employee anyplace other than at a checkout or perhaps one person in electronics. The fishing equipment is also low end (Ugly stick being the best) and minimal. So I guess the message is some Walmart’s may have extensive fishing departments but in others it is minimal. So don’t rely on them. As others have almost every State sells short term licenses .
