To tag? Or not to tag?

Well I have a question for the group. I catch a whole lot of Bass out of my work pond. I don't know how many I have caught over and over. I am starting the log them in a log book. My newest infatuation is to buy fish tags and tag the fish I catch. I plan on keeping records Etc for the tags will be numbered and fish will be documented in the logbook. Weighed and measured date, time, and wait. Not to mention the weather and the bait I use. Is this a good idea? Or am I hurting the fish? Do you think it's legal? Would I report my findings do The Game and Parks Commission? Is a tag better than nipping the dorsal fin? All advice and thoughts will be studied. Thanks

Maybe look at it as if you were the fish. Would you want to go around with a nipped finger or a tag on your back saying he got me.

What is there to be gained in a local work pond. Now if the fish and wildlife folks say they want to monitor the pond I see no problem.

But personally to each their own and if logging them works now, why change a working system.

Check with your wildlife just see what they tell you and take it from there.

Tagging is the only way to accurately keep tabs on fish. If it is a private pond and the state did not stock it then I'm pretty sure you can do what you want as long as property owner is ok with it. If the state stocked you'll have to get info and follow state regs. or they may not let you do it unless they are involved.

Snip a small V-shaped nick into the edge of a fin.

Did this in Arkansas, but they contacted State wildlife management. Not only did they get a wealth of information, they also gave away prizes. tagging didn't hurt the fish, and depending on which fish you caught with a tag if I remember correctly there was a $10,000.00 top prize!!!!

Wow, Plumbob, if we looked at it as if we were a fish, we wouldn’t want to be caught either. And maybe eaten.

Check with your local authorities first. Whether anyone on this forum says it's legal or not is of supreme indifference to your local authorities; if you get ticketed and fined, no one here is going to be held responsible. Besides, why would you listen to a bunch of fishermen? Everyone knows they're notorious liars, me included!

I don't think you would eat the fish out of this polluted pond. Maybe I am wrong though?

The tagging (if you go through with it) will hurt the fish a lot less than the way you are holding that jaw.

Agreed think of if someone held you by the jaw and turned you sideways, it would probably pull every muscle in your jaw. Support the fish evenly if you hold it sideways or just hole it up and down.

About the tag, this is the way I'd go you can put identifiers inside the tag so you'll know which fish it is, you can only clip a fin so many ways. Plus I wouldn't be to concerned if you're hurting the fish's feelings, i've read somewhere a fish can only remember a certain event for a moment or two. We think of a fish as being smart but their brain is really just a large swelling on the end of it's spinal chord. They really don't get embarrassed or care what other fish look like they just recognize their next meal.
