langleylj - where are you located? Also, you will get an answer here but you might want to ask that on the Main page too which generally has more fishing questions addressed. Just a suggestion.

Welcome to the Forum, lagley. Pretty general question, they're a lot of cat fishermen on the Forum, maybe they can help you. We need to know what kind of catfish, where you are fishing, what you are using for bait. Give us a few hints.

We always catfish at night. Small live bream work great for bait but check your regs to make sure it's legal where you are.

They can be caught in the daytime, when the gar are spawning using shrimp, the catfish are under them getting their eggs as they disperse them.

They can be caught with spoons and light weight gear after dark by sitting in a boat, casting in the direction of them breaking water when they come up and hit a school of shad and the ones that get hit flutter to the bottom.

I most often use fresh chicken livers.

Welcome langly. There is no bad time that I know of. I guess maybe some times are better than others. I don't know. I've caught catfish at all times of the day and the night and in all kind of weather. I don't know that anyone icefishes for catfish. I don't icefish.

Today was a great day!! Went out and brought home ten that produces 17 pounds of fillets. They were all gorged FULL of shad. Huge bellies. Honestly, I catch catfish on almost every day of the year in East Texas. It was a little chilly but the sun was shining and when we weren't running it was fine. The water temperature was 53 and the air was in the low 60s this afternoon. We also brought home about 8 pounds of shad so we will have bait on the days when they are hard to find.

I can catch catfish any time of the day by fishing on bottom with almost any kind of bait. My goal is trying to catch Bass, preferably, or anything else with a lure and not very successful.

Short answer, anytime you can go is the best time, I've caught them night and day all year long but the water on Tim's Ford doesn't freeze over winter.

It depends on where you live. Here in Wisconsin fishing slows down with the temperature. I primarily fish channel cats and catch them any time after the ice melts in the spring. The bite picks up considerably after water temps rise above 50 degrees. I do best on overcasts days or in the evening.
I have caught cats through the ice, but they have been few and in between.

Welcome Langley. My suggestion is just after daylight and before sunset, unless you set out a trot line, then it’s an all nighter. Tight lines brother.🎣
