If the lake you mentioned has a crappie population probably mid March the crappie will move into the shallow water. hunt up where trees have fallen into the water keep the boat out from them and cast to the brush. Use a 2” tube on a 1/32oz jig under a small bobber. Cast it as close to the brush as you can let the jig sink and then start twitching it give it a couple of twitches and stop and repeat out from the brush for 2 or 3 feet and repeat. I like to use about 10 lb braid that way when I get snagged I can pull on the line and most of the time it will come loose. You might have to reshape the hook. If you take your boat into the brush to retrieve your bobber you will spook the fish.spring Crappie seems to like wood and cover more than structure target these areas.

Howdy roger. I'm glad to see another crappie man on the forum. You're probably not normal as it appears you also hunt & that's a good thing. Sometimes I like minnows & if I can get them I like the "reds". Dealers put a red dye in the water which turns the minnows a dark pink with no ill effects. Oz & I are neighbors, he's in kansas & I'm in oklahoma. I've got some bobbie garlands soaking in garlic just to try his method. I'm really looking forward to this years crappie which has been slow due to lots of rain. Good luck.

Chickamauga Lake Crappie Fishing –

Chickamauga Lake has become famous for its largemouth bass fishing but its crappie fishing has been a well-kept secret. We specifically like to target crappie from February until early April during the "pre-spawn" period. We prefer a longline trolling technique that is incredibly user-friendly. It is a perfect opportunity for inexperienced anglers or even young children to catch lots of fish - as well as a great time to stock the freezer with tasty crappie fillets. There is a minimum size limit of 10-inches and 15-crappie-per-person creel limit. I provide all fishing tackle and lures. You must possess a valid Tennessee fishing license. I do not clean fish. You are responsible for caring for whatever fish you keep.

CHICKAMAUGA LAKE CRAPPIE FISHING INFORMATION;

"In Region 3, Chickamauga offers the best opportunities for crappie fishing currently within the Tennessee River reservoirs," said Jolley. "Good spawning success, available preferred crappie habitat and ample forage, gizzard and threadfin shad, have ensured a viable population. Several new fish attractors were installed over last winter and these sites can be found on the TWRA website."

Black and white crappie are both present in the population, but black crappie are most abundant. Richard Simms (www.sceniccityfishing.com) has been fishing the lake since his youth and has been guiding professionally on the lake for many years. He says he has seen a shift in the population dynamic over the years. White crappie were most abundant when he was a kid, but now he would estimate the ratio of black crappie outnumbering white crappie at about a 60/40 split.

Average size varies year to year based on spawning, but an angler might catch three short fish to one legal fish, 10 inches or greater. Simms primarily guides for crappie from late February through early April, with the peak of success often occurring during the last two weeks of March, but that varies due to weather patterns.

Best Places to Fish in Tennessee: Chickamauga Lake:

5 Key Strategy Tips for Locating and Catching Fish Chickamauga Lake:
1. Shallow Water Regions: These regions contain cover such as brush, drowned wood and docks attract post-spawn largemouth. Woody cover or brush found close to main points are particularly productive. Zara Spooks and Heddon Torpedos baits can be effective at this time. The month of May produce the best topwater bite.

2. Spawning Crappie: During the spawn, crappie move into shallow brush and stump beds. Spider rigs can be effective. Following the spawn, typically by May, crappie move into deeper water ranging from 7 to 30 feet deep. Deep water drop-offs and near creek mouths are prime summer haunts. Summer crappie fishing can be difficult and can be sporadic. Trolling creek channel edges in 12- to 20-feet with deep diving crankbaits like the Bandit 300 Series Crappie lure can produce good catches.

3. Bluegill and Shellcracker: These fish provide exciting action for anglers of all ages and skill levels during spring and summer. April and May can produce the best catches.

Being retired I spend most of deer season there in my camper. I love retirement

I built a cabin in Brunswick Co, Va. so I could get my wife a nice place to stay. Got me back hunting after a couple of years of not being to leave her alone. We have about 5000 acres and 40 members and families. Closed up hunt camp last weekend but we still go up as chores are never done. Food plots, stands, shooting lanes, plus improvements on the cabin, heck, ya'll know the drill. I'm looking forward to spring for fishing. Could go now for raccoon perch but need to also do stuff around here. Mike

Don't you dare European mount that beautiful creature. Do it right. My Granddaughter shot her first deer this season, a four point with a .243 at 180 yards. She, from a young age, 5, she's 13 now, has been an Annie Oakley. Out shoots all of us, even her dad who is a dead eye. Mike

That's what I thought in the Early Spring. I haven't seen them come up until May.

Just depends on the water temp.

At power plant lakes they vary.

Do you just use chopped garlic are whole cloves cut up? And do you add any water to it? That’s something I really wanna try this spring I know minnows are good but they get a little pricy.

I use garlic salt in a light vegetable oil. The dunk the bait into the mixture; moderate success.
