I began to have this problem when I was fishing heavier gear on Leech Lake this summer. I was setting the hook harder than I had before with these reels and then trying to keep the fish out of the weeds. My reel started to reel backwards when I would set the hook, making it very difficult to get hooksets. I switched to a second reel that day and it began to do the same thing. Right now I can sometimes reel it backwards without any force on the reel. Any help would be appreciated.

Star drag is loose.

So when you reel the spool goes the other way?

No it still goes the right way, but it has the ability to occasionally spin backwards like handle and spool

The line is too loose on the reel, and it's slipping, maybe? You would have to remove it and rewind it. Put electrical on the arbor and keep it tight when you put it on.
Were you fishing in the Bermuda Triangle?
Topic: Baitcast reel anti reverse troubleshooting...
The anti reverse bearing on most reels is on the large gear post where the handle attaches (usually covered up by the drag star and reel casing). The biggest thing with these is they get oiled or greased - sometimes by the factory and sometimes by guys just excessively applying oil/grease to anything that moves. Either way - any kind of grease in the reverse bearing will cause it to intermittently fail - the bearings turn one way but have a latch that keep them from going backwards - too much oil/grease/grime and these latches don't catch. There could be mechanical failure that requires replacing the bearing as well.
Try thoroughly cleaning the bearing with acetone or brake cleaner to remove any oil/grease - hit it with a tooth brush to make sure it really clean. Apply very sparing amount of oil.

Depends on the type of reel. What do you have? On ambassadors there is a flat spring that works the anti lock pin. I had to replace it on two of mine.
If it has a flipping switch check to make sure it was pushed to the on position.
He still never answered if it happened while in the Bermuda Triangle. Maybe just needed to change location before disappearing.
What reel ? Brand and model .
