Movin to minneapolis in mid february. Anyone know some good rivers for wading? My favorite targets are smallies and pike but if there are some good trout streams near by i would love to hear about them.

I am and if I'm not mistaken there are a few if others. If you like smallmouth you will be near some world class smallie fishing as well as excellent pike and musky fishing. We have good trout fishing within an hour drive and great lakes steelhead if you're willing to drive a little further. Not to mention the walleye largemouths, catfish, sturgeon, crappies... It is a fishing paradise!

With the recent addition of an Orvis store we are up to three fly shops in the metro area plus more in the SE and the north shore. The other Twin Cities stores are Bob Mitchell's and Men's Provisions. Both are excellent. Check in with those folks when you get here to learn about locations and flies etc.

Trout unlimited is pretty active up here, both the twin cities chapter as well as the chapter in western Wisconsin. There are lots of volunteer opportunities to help with everything from habitat improvement to classroom education.

One last thing, I reccomend the Great Waters Fly Fishing Expo which is on March 20-22 this year. The show is great with tons of speakers and the film competition is very cool.

I think you'd be surprised with how little you have to drive to find good fish. This fish was caught about 35 minutes from downtown St Paul.

Also, welcome to the "cities" đź‘Ť

I'm a local. Sidewaters of the Mississippi in the Twin Cities can be good for smallies, though the best action is farther up river in Central MN. The upper parts of the St. Croix are also good for smallies, though you can still find them further downriver near the confluence with the Miss. If you drive 2 hours south, you can get some really good fishing on the Root river and creeks in that area for both smallies and trout. I'd suggest purchasing a kayak if you really want to open up your fishing access as the Root can be tough to wade in spots due to depth.

As for trout fishing, you'll need to drive south to the whitewater or root rivers (and many others in the area), or drive across the border into WI. The Kinni and Rush rivers are 45 min-1 hours drive depending on location and are blue ribbon trout streams. Lots of public access, good fish numbers, and all natural reproduction.

I also second the recommendation on Great Waters Fly Expo and Bob Mitchell's fly shops. Lunds Fly shop in River Falls, WI is also a great stop (my local shop).

That experience is a nice contrast to the dark and secret brook trout spots you can ... Still dressed in camouflage but now wearing waders and toting a 5-weight, ... A wide variety of spinning gear is useful for steelhead fishing the river mouths, ...

April in Minnesota brings the warm promise of spring, the sweet music of migrating waterfowl and gobbling turkeys, and some of those near-legendary “hour-to-hour” weather changes. All can add spice to another long-awaited April tradition: the state stream trout fishing opener, which kicks off an action-packed six-month-long season.

I wish I had a response to your post but I moved from Minnesotta to Fl when I was 3, and that was about 50 years ago, lol. Although I did finally go back to White Bear for a week in 2017, lol.
