We're a Yamaha house and I'm looking into Tohatsu for a project I've been working on. I don't hear anything bad about them, but their dealer network is sparse which worries me a little.

Love my 9.9 Yamaha long shaft electric start and power tilt. So easy to use and dependable. I use the easy steer system connecting my Yamaha 70 to the kicker.

I am putting a kicker on my Klamath 17 this week for safety purposes. I often take the boat out on Puget Sound. As I get older I have come to the conclusion that I need a backup to my 60 hp. Merc bigfoot.
I am looking for opinions. The motor will be a long shaft with electric start and power tilt. Thanks

My 15 hp Yamaha has never failed me in the 6 years that I have owned it... came with my 2003 Smokercraft... easy to service...

I had a Merc (Tohatsu) 7hp on my Crestliner 16ft fiberglass (early 60s model). It worked great, was economical and enough power to get me around some of the larger lakes north of Spokane. Unfortunately, someone wanted it more than me one night and it was stolen off my boat (parked in my driveway). Best of luck and tight lines.

Thanks all. The Yamaha is mounted. I will hook up the fuel lines including syphon valves at the fuel separator as soon as the tylenol kicks in. And, I put this computer down. I am beginning to feel like the commercial (substituting "fishing Stage". Sorry, I can't go fishing now. I am watching Bill Dance Fishing show.

Honda has taken over the outboard motor market . They are dependable, and all your fish and game, coast guard, sheriff marine boats and most recteational boaters use them. They use very little gas especially the lower HP motors. I have a 30hp ,electric start, electric tilt, I submerged for 4 days in the delta ,pulled plugs drained water, changed oil and filter and started right up. haven't changed the water pump in 4 years and still pumping strong.I burn all the gas out of motor after every use and it fires up every time I use it,which is quite frequently.Honda makes a great outboard just like there cars.I recommend it 100% ,THE STURGEONGENERAL.

Honda has taken over the outboard motor market .... (show quote)

This has nothing to do with this topic, but I saw you are from Antioch ... when I was in the fire dept. in Moraga, I lived in the little house at the entrance to Bridgehead Marina. with a 25 ft. Chris Cavalier in E Shed that I used for sturgon and stripper ... largest sturgon I landed was 325 lb. and one 56 lb Stripper... those were the days... thanks for the trigger... lol...

I had a 9.9 Yamaha for years. Good motor. I sold it when I changed boats and went to an 8hp Tohatsu. Super impressed with Tohatsu. Best cold weather starting kicker I've had. And they are cheaper. It also says a lot that every Merc under 15hp is really a Tohatsu. Meaning the guts of the engine. I think Nissans under 15hp are also Tohatsu.
