I went out today to scout out my favorite carp spot, where they gorge on mulberries. Well, they used to anyway. I found the dam and the mill there have been removed and just a trickle of water left in the creek.
It was a great spot to hook big carp & check my drags. I'm gonna miss that spot, it was one of a kind in my area ...

That's a bummer nutz. Hate to hear that for you.

Went last week and picked some wild Mulberries so the wife made a pie. So good we went yesterday to our hidden blackberry patch and got some for the freezer. And on the way home stopped and got some more Mulberries to put in the freezer. We,ll check the patches about every 3 days now.

Have raspberry bushes that sprouted up all over yard from birds eating, than depositing. The one bush I actually care for, netted it from them but one smart mockingbird figured out how to lift the net and get under it. I watched it one day. So I'm letting a couple sprouted ones grow and giving them to the critters.
Question about mulberries. Are they like Elderberries we have wild up here? How do you get rid of the middle part and stems? Elderberries are big and juicy but a lot of "stem."

Had a friend give me a 10 ft. one and we planted it yesterday. It had about 50 berries on it and I watched the birds eat just about all of them.

You have bees too? Cool!

That's sad. Why do they always have to "improve" which ends up taking away a lot of what us "more mature" folks like.

Same thing with muscadine vines growing over a lake edge or creek bank.

I looked up Elderberries. Don't think we have them down here. The mulberries do have the stem on them and we cut them off as close as we can. The inside part cooks down and softens up.

Hey Gordon,

Looks like you and your wife hit the blackberry jackpot! When I was a kid, we had several mulberry trees in the neighborhood! One tree produced white ones and the other dark berries! They were delicious! Mom always knew that we went to the trees because we arrived home with purple lips and stained tee shirts!...Lol Big fun!

Heard of the white ones but never seen one. Did they stain your hands like the dark ones?

No, they didn't stain, they were sweeter than the others. I haven't seen a tree since I was a kid..

My grandfather had a large farm with multiple fruit trees. My favorite were the muscadines! The horse pasture had trees that were covered with them. I use to get up on the horse' back to pick a bucket full, tied a rope on the bucket and lowered it into the well that was always full of cool water, sat under a tree and ate my full...Hahahaha..Those trees were destroyed to make way for a 300 unit apartment complex about three miles from Shaw Air Force Base. Now I buy them from the Farmers Market when they are in season. A neighbor makes mucadine wine every year! Too sweet for me but delicious..The black berries were abundant, snakes like them too!..Lol
