Finally got the gremlins out of the boat motor and got out for halibut on Sunday. Met up at 7:30, got to the grounds around 8:45 or so and there were quite a few boats. It was a new spot for me, but apparently the fish were there just by the number of boats alone. We (Karel-co boat owner, Ethan-commercial deck hand and I) worked the depth change ledges trolling frozen anchovies, 1 rod with a hoochie, 1 with a flasher and 1 with just the frozen anchovie. Turned out the small stand alone anchovie was the ticket. Tide was ripping pretty good but managed to hook up fairly often, a number of “diaper stripers”, some halibut shakers and then keepers of both. When the tide changed the action got good, I initially had the hot rod, then it was Ethan’s rod that got hot, Karel had a nice 27” or so halibut up to the side of the boat but it came unbuttoned, ended up with our limits of halibut and 2 stripers. Got back to the dock about 2:30. We did have a celebrity sighting, Klay Thompson’s boat was there also halibut fishing. Since the Warrior’s season has ended I assume he was aboard.

Ethan’s experience as a commercial deck hand was invaluable and he worked the deck like we were paying him. It was great having him aboard not only for that, but he’s really a stand up young man to boot! All in all a great 1st outing!

Welcome back to the world of catching Denny! Glad the gremlins are gone, so don't let them back in the boat.
Grats on a great day and some nice pics.

Thanks Garey! I’m glad they’re gone too. Turned out to be a “new” part (pump) that I installed…… go figure, chasing my tail thinking “not that because it’s new”…………….. glad we were rewarded with limits 1st time out though!

Interesting the lone anchovy caught fish vs the hoochie and flasher, might have to give it a try. Thanks for the info!

Yup, that was the ticket, just make sure your anchovie has a nice rotation to it, not too fast………
