Hey everyone I’m seeing a lot of great input across the country and I’m hoping to add a little here for those fishing in Jackson Lake located in GA. I try to fish a few times each week so I’ll do my best to post something here as things progress.
Fishing at Jackson today was productive. I have found early morning is more active than later afternoon as the water temps are driving the bait fish into different areas of the lake depending on those temperatures. If there is a single significant tip it would be to Chase the bait fish. The shad are 2-4 inches in length and keeping your bait selection near this size will help. The bass are hitting top water in the early morning and the window is short so you’ll have to adapt as time moves on.
If your target is bass, you’ll need to keep it moving with shad like presentations of swim/ jerk/ crank/ and even flukes in the morning hours. Dipping your selection into a yellow or chartreuse dye may help too. Just don’t be afraid to keep the bait moving as bass are actively chasing anything close to them that moves. As the day begins to warm you’ll need to start working in deeper water (10- 15ft). The occasional bite may be found under a leaning tree but most of the action will slow as fish look for cooler water in the heat of the day. The working colors seem to be watermelon with a dip chartreuse dye or pumpkin.
Crappie are schooled in moderate to deeper areas where structure is found. Most people target the bridges but if you venture out you can find them 15-20 ft from deeper docks. It’s almost like they feed under docks in the night or early morning hours but stage 20ft away to escape the heat. Your best bait is going to be minnows if you’re not going to troll. The target depth on one side of the lake is 10ft while the other side is 15ft so you’ll have to experiment. If you’re lucky and have a Live Scope you’ll see the schools in heavy numbers early and scatter as the day goes along.
One of the challenges fishing this time of year is being able to avoid other watercraft or those wakes while being productive — not to mention the heat. Early morning or after sunset is going to be the best time for fishing in general but catching catfish is better in the evening hours. Again follow the bait. You’ll be more productive even with cats where bait fish are present. I’ve had good success in the mouths of both the yellow river and bear creek. Once you find the shad schooling at the surface take the time to fish the area and you won’t be disappointed.
