What's the one piece of advice you wish you had known when you first started fishing?
A bad day of fishing is still better, than a good day at the office.
When I was about 10 years old I hooked a big bass on a jitterbug top water lure. I fought him to the bank but he came up shook his big head and slung the lure. The tension on the rod shot the lure straight up and it hit me in the face. One of the treble hooks hung in my upper eyelid.
Lucky for me, the hook did not penetrate to the barb. I was able to reach up and pull the hook out.
So, beware of the dangers of treble hooks or any fishing hook as far as that goes, especially when landing a fish.
I fish the beach behind Costco for Stripers. Any day now, they will show up and bite. I'm hooked, because about 20 years ago, on my second cast, I landed a 25 lb. Striper off that beach! It was still dark. I used a chrome crocodile lure. That was my first striper, as I was fishing the bay in my boat before. Since then, I landed several. The last couple years, there's a lot of small ones. I had years when you land a limit in an hour. I release everything under about 5 lbs. I love catching them on poppers! It's a blast. SP Minnows, swimsuits, Poppers, work good for me. Look for bird activity and move up and down the beach, until you get bit. Bait fishermen, using soft shelled sand fleas do good, but I don't like using bait. So you graduated fro Seaside high in 67? I graduated from Monterey High in 71. I lived in Seaside my entire life. Tight lines!
Pole, line, hook and worms. Sinkers, corks, minners, nets, rods, reels and artificals came later when I get out of 3rd grade. I fished before I walked and talked, but smiled from birth when I caught a big bluegill. Got my first Lucky 13 when I was, you got it, 13.

My one piece of advice I already knew. It was from my father. If you fish offshore make sure you have a compass and know how to use it. Electronics can fail anytime. Check you direction on the way out and add 180 Deg. to that number and you'll get home safely.
Excellent suggestion Gordon, even if you're hiking.
You've got to pay attention, regardless.
All good comments especially about time with family and friends. God takes us home before we know it.
A great post!! So many great answers!! I'm 81 and I still get excited with a good bluegill !! Don't loose the love !!
First fish that hooked me was at a boy scout camp in Arizona, I was 12. They had a lake and I walked along it and found some line and a hook. Tied the line to a 1 inch thick stick and looked under rocks until I found a Perry Winkle. Use a small rock for a sinker and threw it out. Caught the biggest Blue Gill I have ever seen. It wouldn't fit in a bucket with out curling. Oh, forgot the stick broke but I grabbed the top piece before it went into the water and pulled the fish in hand over hand. LOL
