David, that's interesting. If I keep mine too long they lose weight and get sort of skinny, maybe dehydrated. I'll have to try that.

Wow David. I thought I was the only one with nightcrawlers that were 3+ years old.
I took mine out to the flower bed last week and set them free.
Man, some of them were jumbos for sure.

I was wondering if anyone wanted to share any tips on using crawlers without making a mess. If I took them out of the soil rinsed them and put them in a container with water would they last, and would I want to put ice in with them or just keep them cold.

Hey Tom, I used to raise nightcrawlers for a teen business back in the day. I caught them at night in Massachusetts. I kept them in a mixer of dirt and coffee grounds and wet newspaper. made a wooden box to keep them in. If you keep them mildly moist they will stay alive. It was an open aired system. some will die but the others will live in the mix.

Night crawlers are always a mess. learn to put them on your hook and you will be all set. I fish with them all the time. The idea is to keep them alive and use whole crawlers when fishing. the larger Bass can not resist them.
Good Luck.

Put them in a cottage cheese container with wet newspaper.

Hi Everyone
If you enjoy fishing with nightcrawlers, invest $4 for a worm threader it will be the best $4 you’ve ever spent.

I bought one and tried like heck to thread a worm on a #2 hook, absolutely cannot do it, even after watching some videos.

I even poke my fingers with plastic worms Jimmy. Comes with the territory. I consider it "testing for hook sharpness". 😂

I run the worm all the way up on the line. Sometimes there’s more worm on the line and there is the hook. I have almost always use nightcrawlers red wigglers could be a challenge.
