How do you know that the geese are really Canadian? Do they carry passports or honk with an accent?

They sound like A, A,A. lol. Used to work for Canadian firm driving truck. And when they said A, I would say B,C,D lol. And could never understand them saying Zed instead of Z. I sometimes ask them how to pronounce ZEBRA. lol.

With all of my time in the woods, or on the water I have noticed many things, or behaviors. For example, when you see a flock of Canadian geese migrating, they fly in a large V formation. Typically, one “leg” of the V is longer than the other side. Does anyone know why that is?

More geese in the longer leg!

The senior and strongest birds take turns leading the V. Those who are further in back, can get a partial free ride by drafting on the wake of the first bird. This is much the same if you were on a freeway and got up close behind a tractor trailer!

Junior birds are further back in the V and if they happened to fly in front of the leader, they are reprimanded in some fashion. I have never figured that out. When a junior bird does mistakenly fly in front, he immediately folds one wing, drops about six to ten feet and then opens that wing again which puts him back in proper formation. I have often watched them come back to a lake at lunch time and this is their procedure. Just Sayin...RJS

I’ve seen that with horses when I’ve gone in a group. There’s always a horse running up to the front to try to lead and 9 times out of 10 it’s the horse my wife is riding on.

Geese will do formation and when the leader tires it will move into formation and another goose will take point. Amazing Used to hunt them. Good eating except like ducks ect all dark meat. They only mate with one and if or when the mate is no longer around it will not mate with another.

There are more geese on that side.

An invasion
When I was a kid a Canadian goose was a rare sight. Now they’re everywhere and they poop like dogs. They have a guy with a rake at the local state park that rakes goose poop all day.
A local town hired a diver to come up from below to drown them. Didn’t last long.

Well, Hoss: Since the geese lay their fertile eggs to hatch in Canada, it would be very difficult for an egg to find its way to Mexico! No doubt, if it were possible for a baby goose to be born in Mexico, I am sure it would be scorned and treated with a lot of harassment. Geese have been doing their thing for millennia, when I was a kid in North Texas, you could hear them flying back north and even see them on a moon lit night!

Who knows but their honking could be commands, or shouts of encouragement for the weaker flyers!

I suspect that the exact route, watering holes, and places where they stop and eat are firmly imprinted in each of their brains, any one of the adults could lead the flock. Some do get killed by hunters, making it necessary for others to step in and lead their flock! Just Sayin...RJS

I'm guessing that one of the geese in the longer line will be next in line to take over lead. ??

Mother Nature is amazing and the geese have adopted the drafting techniques used as Robert and others have eluded to. The lead goose creates a vortex off his/her wings which is used by the trailing geese for lift and the ability to expend less energy. The leader will guide the flock as long as it can, then drop back a few spots to rest and the next goose takes over as leader of the flock. Whether or not the longer line in the flock is on the leeward side is still up for debate, as geese rarely fly directly into a headwind. If this actually happens, the formation tends to even out on each side for aerodynamic purposes.
The short, yet risky answer is of course there are more geese on the longer side. 😜

Maybe. The longest line creates more energy?
